After suffering through heartbreak, Rose is determined to move on without Lee. She can’t cling to her first love forever, and she knows that. As long as he’s happy with his decision, she’ll struggle to move on.

But when Lee’s sister Grace invites her to a photoshoot in the French Alps for spring break, Rose quickly realizes it’s a trap – Lee and his new fiance Kiera are there too. Kiera toys mercilessly with Lee and Rose and their feelings for each other.

Excerpt

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“Say it again,” He murmurs. “My name. I want to hear it in your voice again.”

I’m shaking, but I manage to open my mouth.

“Lee.”

He kisses me then, fully and with enormous weight. His lips practically crush mine, his kisses bruising as he trails them across my cheek, up to my ear, and back down to my lips again. His one free hand laces around my back, and I moan and arc into him. I know it’s wrong, I know he has a fiancé and he loves her, but this is everything I’ve wanted for months. A voice in my head chants for me to stop, over and over, but he feels so right in all the wrong ways – his biceps against my back, his thick wrist and long fingers nearly tangled in my hair, his hard need pressing against my stomach through his jeans.

SF RDB Banner

Title: Seizing Fate (Predetermined Series: Book Two)
Author: Heather Van Fleet
Genre: Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Release Day: October 8, 2013
Publisher: Sunshine Press
Blitz Host: Lady Amber’s Tours

<><><><><><><><><><>

SFBlurb:

And you thought Emmy’s life was a hot mess before…

Jack’s gone off to Arizona with his brother, but for how long? Emmy doesn’t have a clue. In his place, though, is Zachary. The whiny, miserable, alpha wolf–boy who is more than ready to take on the duty of her mate/boyfriend — if she’d let him, that is. But the last thing Emmy wants is to deal with a boy who believes that the world should fall solely at his feet whenever he demands it.

But hey, at least her step–douche is gone, and her life is back to an almost normal sense, right?

Wrong again, Emmy’s life will never again be normal…

With her Uncle Prick in town and her best friend acting as secretive as ever, Emmy finds new challenges to overcome — challenges that no seventeen–year–old girl should ever have to deal with. For one thing, what is up with her dream–liaison status anyway? What does it mean, really? And why does her little brother have to go through it too? And then there’s her mom. The lady is acting a tad bit odd, to put it nicely. After all these years, she finally wants to step up and be a parental figure? Heck no! Emmy’s definitely not copacetic with that idea.

But with the bad, there’s got to be some good out there for her somewhere, right?

Add in the wolves, witches, drama, and lots of kisses and you get Emmy the Extraordinaire, the girl with strawberry–colored hair, and a chip on her shoulder. She’s finally on her way to finding out what her life and her future both have in store for her, even if the road to getting there is nowhere near as easy as she hoped it would be. But Emmy is tough, and more than ready to take on life with her bare hands.

It’s just too bad she’s madly, desperately, insanely in love with a boy who insists on making her life both a miserable hell and utter perfection at the same time.

Excerpt:

Pressure, fire, wetness, tongues — single words were all I could think as our mouths battled. God, I’d never been kissed like this before. Ever, and if we stopped, I’d die a happy woman from his lips touching mine alone. He tugged his hand into the back of my hair, pulling my chin upwards, yanking me towards him. I clawed at his shirt, ready to rip it from his massive body. I pulled at his jacket first, lowering it over his shoulders until it fell to the floor. The buttons jingled against the tile, scattering over our feet. Damn, if he didn’t care about his signature black coat falling apart, then I had to wonder what else I could get away with.

Excerpt:

Back on the sand I talked Emily into paddling along the water’s edge. She whined a little, complaining about the cold, but when I threatened to chuck her whole body into the frothy sea she soon quit moaning and followed me towards the shore. I stood still for a few long seconds when we reached it – gazing out in awe towards the endless stretch of unsettled water.

For a moment I was back home. I was alone, admiring the effervescent waves crash against the rocks, taking forgotten debris and lost branches with them as they ventured back out into the impossibly vast ocean, and wishing they could take me with them.

“Crap that’s cold!” Emily blared as a small wave lapped over her bare foot, snapping me back to consciousness.

“Quit being a pussy,” I replied, kicking up a mighty-big spray of water her way. She jumped away from me quicker than if I’d just pulled a knife on her.

“Oh my God, Dexter!” she squealed! “Stop it!” she continued when I splashed her again. “I mean it now. Stop,” she added after the third time, growing a little more serious each time. But I was having too much fun. Her angry face was too cute.

Sensing her irritation growing by the second and enjoying it more than I should (I’m mentally stunted remember?) I scooped her up in one swift movement and tossed her over my shoulder, running deeper into the ice-cold water.

“Dexter, please. Put me down!”

“You got it, doll,” I said, laughing lightly and plopping her down into the waist-high water.

“No! Please!” Any trace of humor immediately evaporated from my body. “PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,” she begged, her eyes on fire with panic. She was all-out scared. Fuck that she was petrified.

I lunged forward instantly, taking her in my arms like a baby and ran as fast as the soft sand beneath my feet would allow, towards the dry land.

“Jesus, Em, I’m so sorry,” I rushed out. She was shaking in my arms. It was more than just the cold – it was pure unadulterated fear. “Shh, doll. You’re out now. I’ve got you,” I reassured. She buried her head in my chest and her body vibrated against me as the tears started to flow. What the fuck had I done? “I’m sorry, doll. I’m so fucking sorry.”

Slowly but surely her body began to relax against me. Then she looked up at me just long enough to say,

“Take me home.”

So I did. And all the day’s fun and giggles became nothing but a grieved memory.

REVIEW by V. Dold on 9/20/2013 at http://tbr-io.blogspot.com/2013/09/my-review-of-good-intentions-by.html

D.N. Simmons is so descriptive I swore I was watching a movie and not reading a book. I could virtually see everything happening in my mind as I read it. This is descriptive writing genius! I actually found myself imagining what the zombies would smell like and what they smelled and sensed when they detected a live human. I cannot wait until book 2 when I get to read even more about the Vampires!

The Virus in the book is so aggressive that it is spreading like a literal wild fire and the panic of the humans trying to leave the city and clogging the roadways just creates a zombie smorgasbord all laid out nice and tasty. Imagine living through the first days of the show the walking dead and then make the zombies stronger than a normal human and really, really fast.

I was so drawn into this book that I blew through it in a matter of hours. *Sigh* now I have to wait for the next book to come out, this is going to be a long hard wait.

Winter’s Heat

by Cristin Harber

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MEDIA KIT CristinHarber_WintersHeat_2500px (2)BLURB:
After putting her life on the line to protect classified intelligence, military psychologist Mia Kensington is on a cross-country road trip from hell with an intrusive save-the-day hero. Uninterested in his white knight act, she’d rather take her chances without the ruggedly handsome, cold-blooded operative who boasts an alpha complex and too many guns.
Colby Winters, an elite member of The Titan Group, has a single objective on his black ops mission: recover a document important to national security. It was supposed to be an easy in-and-out operation. But now, by any means necessary becomes a survival mantra when he faces off with a stunning woman he can’t leave behind.
When Titan’s safe houses are compromised, Colby stashes Mia at his home, exposing his secret—he’s the adoptive father of an orphaned baby girl. Too soon, danger arrives and Mia lands in the hands of a sadistic cartel king with a taste for torture. As hours bleed into fear-drenched days, Colby races across the globe and through a firestorm of bullets to save the woman he can’t live without.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Setup- Colby Winters and Mia Kensington are waiting for her attackers to make another move. They’re trying to appear distracted outside a motel room, as if they let their guard down.

What was it like? Oh, man. He had a thing for her in a bad way. Winters bent his head toward her. Their foreheads kissed, and there was no question. While she was with him, she was his. His to protect. His to savor. A woman like Mia was rare. At least he had brains enough to notice.

He never should’ve put her in this position. He could’ve packed her off in a plane, back toward the East Coast. Someone from Titan could’ve kept her safe while he finished his original job. But selfishness and curiosity made it so he wouldn’t push her away. He couldn’t, because an irrepressible desire consumed him, powering lust through his veins.

“Colby.” Her hushed whisper tickled his skin. “What are we going to do?”

His pulse thumped in his neck, and he tightened the forearm wrapped around her waist, melding her onto him.

I’m on the job. Serious danger ahead.

He’d missed it before and couldn’t let that happen again. No time for arousal. No time for fantasies.

Images flooded his brain, searing his senses. He remembered the taste of her tongue. Red-hot cinnamon. A sweet, delicious burn of aphrodisia.

What were they going to do? Where to begin… A million ideas popped to mind, starting with making good use of the wall behind him.

No woman had pressed against him like this, so pliable, supple, and luscious. They had always draped him like sex kittens on steroids. Those other women were as over-sexed and one-dimensional as they were obvious, all self-fulfilling prophecies, and they were the definitive opposite of Mia Kensington.

Before Mia’s hands explored him, before her beautiful body had even disrobed, she toyed with his mind like it was the first of many playgrounds. And he wanted to play so bad.

“I’ve started a list.” His lips flitted over hers. “Want me to share?”

Her eyelashes fluttered. “What kind of list?”

“I have you thirty feet from a bed. What kind of list do you—” A drunken couple stumbled out of the bar. Actually, more likely a john and a pro. He should have seen them before he heard them. “More on the list later, doll.”

Men were coming to hurt her, and his hard-on could pick another time for games.

“Okay, Mia, here’s what we’re going to do. When they pull up, act like we let loose. We had too many drinks.” He motioned to the karaoke bar with a tip of his head, then dipped his lips to her neck, lingering under her ear. “I’m convincing you to come to my room. You’re not putting up too much of a fight. Just enough to keep it fun.”

He nipped her earlobe, and she took a tiny gasp. It made his gut jump. Her taste drugged him, intoxicated him. Temptation was a cruel mistress. Giving him a little and making him wait.

“That’s your plan?”

“Not my whole plan, no. But that’s the part you have to play.” He traced the slide of her neck. “Think you can act mildly interested?”

“You’re crazy.” Her voice was husky. “Men are trying to kill us. How can you think about sex?”

“You’re not?”

“I’m… I’m—”

“You’re what? I’m getting into character. You should give it a try.”

“You’re rubbing your hard-on against me, is what you’re doing.”

“All part of my cover. Believable, huh?” Her innocent act was toast. She was far more like Jessica Rabbit than Snow White. “If I tried to drag you off to bed right this second, you wouldn’t join me?”

There was only one answer. He knew it. Felt it as sure as he felt her body mold against him. She couldn’t fight their hunger either.

Her breaths escalated. The quick rise and fall of her breasts fueled him. Winters cupped her chin in his hands, palms caressing her cheeks. Sweet Mia. If he could freeze this moment, it’d be one he’d put on repeat.

“I would,” she whispered. “But…”

“Forget everything else. It’s just you and me.” He thumbed her lips, dragging the bottom one down.

Slowly, his hands drifted into her hair. Lust hung heavy in the cool night air. Her dark lashes fluttered, and her hard nipples pressed against his chest.

How beautiful would she be naked? How would she feel? Impossibly smooth. He would whisk across her sensitive spots, watching those succulent breasts rise and fall in anticipation. He would make sure she ached for him. As much as he ached now.

His fingers tangled into her hair, and Mia leaned her head back, heavy lidded and heady breaths.

“Shouldn’t you watch for the bad guys instead of torturing me?” Her eyes were sealed shut, defenseless.

His lips grazed her neck, and she purred, the sinful sound acting as a deft stroke to his already engorged shaft.

“You don’t think I can multi-task?” He kissed behind her ear, dancing his mouth down her neck. It was a tease. A simple promise of what was to come. When he had a moment to concentrate on her, he’d do whatever it took—lick, kiss, caress, and suck—to make her cry out for him.

His fingers slid to her nape, trailing to the front of her shirt. The fabric felt fragile under his palms. He was losing a battle to a ripped shirt on a pretty girl, but revenge would be amazing.

“How can you do this,” she nudged her head down to where he nuzzled his erection, “and pay attention to anything else?”

“Can you imagine what it’s going to be like between us when I don’t have to worry about anyone but you?”

Excerpt

“I’m looking for a woman who just came in. Gorgeous redhead in a green dress?”

The man raised a brow and Luke realized he probably sounded like a stalker.

“Reagan Deveraux,” Luke added. “I was supposed to meet her in the lobby.”

“I believe the woman you’re looking for went into the lounge.”

Luke thanked the man and headed toward where he pointed. He found Rae sitting at the bar throwing back a shot of tequila. He had no idea she did shots. He’d only ever seen her sip beer. Now she was licking salt from her hand like a pro. He watched, transfixed, as her red lips closed over a wedge of lime and sucked.

He wasn’t the only man watching.

Luke felt a jab of jealously when a designer-suited dude eased in and offered to buy her a drink.  Then a surge of relief when Rae turned the man away. Luke cursed his whacked-out emotions.  He shouldn’t be feeling anything for Rae aside from betrayal and confusion.

He joined her at the bar. “What are you doing?”

“Treating myself to a birthday drink.” She barely cast him a glance while attacking her second shot.

Luke clenched his jaw as she repeated the ritual. Salt, tequila, lime. Lick, drink, suck. Not overtly sexy, but sexy all the same. He gestured to the bartender. “Two Coronas, please.” Then he looked back to Rae. “Drinking alone on your birthday is sort of pathetic.”

“I’m not alone.” She met his gaze.  “Unfortunately.”

Luke searched her eyes, his gut clenching when he caught a glimpse of Rachel Lacey, the same vulnerability that had intrigued him all those months ago. He had a weakness for women in need. Hell, he had a weakness for women period.

The bartender served two longnecks.

Luke waved off the glasses.

“Put it on my tab,” Rae said.

“It’s on me.” Luke paid cash for two of the most expensive beers he’d ever bought in his life.

“As for the cab,” he said to Rae, “thank you, but I can manage.” He pulled five twenties from his wallet and when she refused, he shoved the money in her purse. “Three months ago you were desperate for money. Or so you said. Jayce called you a trust fund baby. You might not have inherited your fortune until today, but you must have had access to a monthly allowance.”

“I didn’t want to touch that money.”

“Why not?”

“I can’t believe you had me investigated.”

She sounded somewhere between hurt and outraged. Luke knew the feeling. “I had you tracked, which I wouldn’t have done if you had had the decency to say good-bye.”

Gaze averted, she sipped her beer then ordered another shot. “I felt awful about hurting Sam.

Plus I was compromising the success of the Cupcake Lover’s recipe book by refusing to participate in any publicity.”

“So you ran away?”

“I didn’t think I’d be missed.”

What the freaking hell? “Are you that insecure or that oblivious?”

“People come and go all the time, Luke.”

“You’re missing the point, Rae.” He nabbed her wrist as she reached for the salt shaker. Her pulse raced beneath his thumb.  His own heart bucked. He’d always had a talent for reading and finessing women. He had no clue how to handle Rae. Did she have the tolerance to withstand a third shot? He didn’t want to take the chance. He grabbed her shooter and downed the Cuervo himself.  “Why don’t we sit at one of those tables and talk?”

“Why aren’t you on your way to the airport?”

“Why won’t you tell me why you paid for a false identity?

She glanced away, picked at the label on the beer bottle. “I needed to be someone else for a while.”

“Why?”

“It’s personal.”

One thing hadn’t changed. Reagan Devereaux was every bit as aloof as Rachel Lacey. Luke wanted to shake the crap out of her. Kissing her came to mind, too.  He’d never been so angry and turned on at the same time. He told himself it was because she was smoking hot and he’d been celibate for weeks. Aching to jump her bones was natural. It wasn’t because he was jonesing to re-create the magic he’d felt the one and only time they’d locked lips. Who needed that kind of misery? Having a thing for a woman beyond his reach. A woman of privileged birth. A woman who’d earned a master’s degree. A woman worth a freaking million!

Hit the road, Monroe.

He wasn’t getting the answers he wanted so why was he wasting his time? As it was he’d be lucky if he got home before Christmas morning.  Part of him had been desperate to see for himself that Rae was okay. She was more than okay.  Except for her obsessive lying and the tension between her and her mom and that dickhead Geoffrey Stein. Every family had drama, right? The Monroes certainly had their fair share. More often than not, Luke played mediator. He should be home making peace, not here waging war. Besides, reasoning with this woman was a losing battle.

Luke reached down for his backpack and when he straightened the infuriating enigma was finishing off another shot.

For the love of. . .

He couldn’t leave Rae in this bar.  What if she drank herself under the table? What if one of the several men watching took advantage?

“Do you think your mom and Stein left the house yet?”

“I’m sure of it. God forbid they miss a moment of the party.”

“Then come on. I’ll drop you home before I head to the airport.”

“I’m not going home.” She flashed a key card. “I’m staying here tonight.”

“Then I’ll walk you to your room.”

“Not necessary.” She stood, swaying a little on those sexy four-inch heels.

Luke groaned. “Humor me.”

Witnessing the death of your mother, she’s your best friend, and blaming yourself…what an unimaginable scenario for a young girl. Yet this is exactly the place we join young Debbie.

The reality of death and grief is something difficult for all ages. Add to that teen-aged angst and the drama associated with school, changing friendships, day dreams of a teen idol and you have the perfect basis of this young adult book.

Ms. Hitchcock’s writing is filled with reality and strength. Her characters are very vivid and easy to relate to. Bring it all together and you have a very enjoyable book and I look forward to reading her upcoming additions to this series.

This book helped me remember those early teen years and the maelstrom of emotions that came with them. I highly recommend it for a young teen audience. It is wonderfully written and was enjoyable. Thank you Ms. Hitchcock for sharing it with us.

Rafflecopter Giveaway (A Psychic Reading over the Phone)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Excerpt:

Saturday night, the restaurant was especially busy. Tyler kept a firm grip on Maria’s arm as they made their way toward the large table at the back of the room. The entire family would be together tonight for Marti and Cameron’s baby shower. Marti was due to deliver their first baby in a few weeks. It had been too long since they’d all congregated as one group. He looked forward to seeing everyone, but his mind remained on work, the case, and the haunting thoughts of Morgan becoming the Psychic Slayer’s last victim.

Over his dead body.

Emma remained on his mind. He’d taken her out for dinner and a movie a few nights ago. Cameron and Marti were worried about her health. She didn’t eat well and slept even less. She dogged Marti’s heels constantly, afraid she’d die because of the baby. Her own mother had died after giving birth to her, and she was scared the same thing would happen to her stepmother. She loved Marti like her own, real mother. Understandable the little girl was anxious, but Emma’s health worried everyone.

He spotted the group sitting and standing around the table. He and Maria were the last to arrive. He and Sam had been going non-stop on the case since Sam returned from seeing Morgan two weeks ago. Maria saved his sanity, staying at his place most nights. He came home to dinner and company. He never got home at a decent time, but she’d adjusted, and they were in synch. Exhausted from working long hours and worrying about Morgan, he fell into bed and passed out, grateful he didn’t sleep alone.

After Morgan left him and he’d set his mind to building his relationship with Maria, he’d bought her a ring. He’d thought to propose while they were on vacation in Hawaii. Every time he thought the timing and setting were perfect, something stopped him. When they returned home, he’d never found the right moment.

Maria had become a real part of his everyday life these last weeks. What was he waiting for?

He planned to ask her to marry him after dinner tonight. He showed the ring to Sam yesterday. Sam offered his congratulations, even though he thought it a mistake. Tyler knew what he wanted. A wife and children. Pretty soon, he’d have them. Well, they’d have children if he got his mind off the case and mustered up the energy to make love to her.

Maria seemed happy about the marriage idea. They’d discussed it briefly. Her family wanted to see her married and settled, especially her father.

He’d met her parents. They were nice people and certainly approved of him. After all, he had a good job and would provide well for a family. That seemed to be their qualifications for their daughter’s future husband. Her father seemed to disapprove of her working and living on her own. Tyler found that old-fashioned for the times, but Maria seemed eager to please her father and gain his approval. She’d practically put Tyler up on a pedestal, gushing about his job and accomplishments, making him uncomfortable, but he appreciated the compliments.

Tyler spotted Sam and Jack standing together, each drinking a beer. He thought that sounded good and watched as the twin brothers leaned into each other to say something confidentially. Tyler hoped they weren’t talking about him and Maria. He wanted Maria to feel welcome.

Jack whispered into Sam’s ear, “I thought you said she was coming.”

“I talked to her yesterday after he showed me the ring. She said she’d be here. In fact, she already had her ticket.”

“I could have sent the jet for her,” Jack said and took another sip of his beer.

“It’s fine. She’ll be here,” Sam said adamantly.

“I thought Cameron was stubborn when he wanted to marry that horrible woman who faked being pregnant with his baby. Tyler might take the cake for stubbornness if he asks Maria to marry him. She’s nice enough, but she isn’t for him.”

“Once he sees Morgan in person, he won’t go through with it.”

“I hope you’re right,” Jack said and took another sip of his beer.

Cameron joined Sam and Jack. “What’re you two whispering about?”

“Tyler and Maria. They just arrived.” Sam said and tilted his beer in their direction.

“She’s nice,” Cameron said and glanced at the couple. “She came with Tyler to pick up Emma for dinner the other night. She didn’t say much. I wouldn’t peg her as Tyler’s type, though. I thought he had a thing for his psychic ghost.”

“He does. He just doesn’t want to admit it. He won’t have a choice tonight. Morgan’s coming.”

“You’re kidding me.” Cameron couldn’t wait to meet Morgan. As president of Merrick International, he worked with Jack’s wife, Jenna. He heard all kinds of stories from her about Tyler and his psychic ghost. What he didn’t hear from Jenna, he got first hand from Sam and Tyler. The woman was intriguing if nothing else.

Cameron had spent the last several weeks worried about his wife and daughter, Emma. He hoped tonight would bring some fun into their lives and all the gifts would make Emma interested in the baby and less fixated and concerned about the birth.

“I talked to Morgan yesterday,” Sam said. “I told her we’d be here. Don’t tell anyone else. I don’t want Tyler to overhear. Here he comes.”

They all greeted each other and spent time talking and catching up. The children grew restless, so the menus were opened, the orders placed, and dinner served. They enjoyed their meal and each other’s company. Everyone included Maria in the conversation. They added to the cacophony of the restaurant, and Tyler relaxed into the evening like he hadn’t done in a long time. Seated next to Sam, who sat next to Jack, he noticed the two men look down the aisle and simply stare. Then, he heard Sam say, “She’s here.”

More beautiful than Tyler remembered. He’d only seen her once and even that time had only been for a few minutes. Five years ago, her hair had hung down her back in a long braid. She’d worn old jeans and a well-worn navy blue t-shirt. Radiant tonight with her hair unbound. The thick mass waved over her shoulders and down her back. Lovely, it seemed to glow. Tall and slender, her white flowing blouse and blue floral skirt hugged her curves in all the right places.

Her eyes caught him off guard. Blue as the Colorado sky. They looked softly upon him and made him want. She simply took his breath away.

Five years spent talking on the phone and in his mind and she’d left him, only to come back into his life to torture him in person.

He wanted to grab her. To shake her and ask her why she’d come back tonight. After all this time, she’d returned on the night he planned to ask another woman to marry him, when all he wanted to do was take Morgan to his bed. His emotions were everywhere. Angry she’d left, happy to see her, he wanted to strangle her for calling Sam and not him about the case. He wanted to beg her to stay and alternately push her away, so he could have the life he’d been carefully working toward with Maria.

She messed up his mind, and she wasn’t even inside it anymore.

Morgan took a step back. So many emotions ran through her and came from the people in the restaurant and this group in particular. Her carefully constructed walls blocked out a lot, but with so much coming at her, they cracked.

Seeing Tyler rocked her.

The sadness hit Morgan hard. She couldn’t feel anything but anger from Tyler. His dark eyes simply stared at her, no light in them. No joy at seeing her. It hurt to think that after all these years he’d completely closed her out of his life.

She knew why. The pretty woman sitting next to him radiated nice. The exact opposite in appearance as Morgan. Dark hair and eyes, her skin a lovely olive brown. She had a pretty figure and showed as little of it off as possible in her demure green dress. The dress color did show off her lovely skin tone, though.

Morgan felt like the ugly stepsister to the beautiful ladies around the table. Compared to Jenna, Elizabeth, and Marti, she felt like an ugly duckling. Tyler’s girlfriend fit in far better than she, or so she thought.

She weaved her way to the table and stood behind Jack’s wife, Jenna.

“Is it going to happen tonight? The event you warned me about. Who’s going to be hurt? Can we stop it?” Jack asked in rapid fire succession.

“Jack, who is this? Why are you so upset.” Jenna didn’t like seeing her husband’s distress.

Tyler answered the question for everyone by simply saying her name. “Morgan.”

Morgan finally came to her senses and answered Jack’s overflowing concern and urgency. “Jack, sit down. Everything is fine. We have some time. I came here for another reason.”

Sam smiled and she directed her next statement to him. “He is not going to thank you for this.”

About the Author:

KayLeighB&WAuthorPicAuthor of the Bestselling Lost Immortals Saga and the International Bestseller the Prelude. I’m also a mother, blogger, reader, gardener, home renovator, and a slayer of undead Egyptian mummies in Tomb Raider. I believe in karma, coffee, and seriously wish that the producers of Xena would bring my favorite show ever back.

I was born in the race-car city of Charlotte, NC, and now live in the City of Alchemy and Medicine, NC. Most of my characters are based on people that I’ve met throughout my travels and adventures. People tend to stop and start conversations with me as if I’ve known them my entire life. Does this freak me out? Not really. My mom says that one day I’ll get kidnapped by one of them. I told her that if it weren’t for these lovely people then I wouldn’t be able to create the stories that I do.

Some other common tidbits…hmm. I’ve watched the movie Under the Tuscan Sun almost 200 times. Seriously, the way I see it is if I keep watching it enough, then suddenly the house that Diane Lane lives in will magically appear in my backyard. I know. I have a huge imagination!

Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen

KnightBlindness HighRes
Ready for battle, Medieval English knight, Stephen Palmer, charges into the French enemy’s cavalry line. Heeding a warning given months before, he hesitates as he comes face-to-face with the knight in the warning. Struck down in the year 1356, he finds himself landing in the year 2013. Grievously wounded, he’s taken to a nearby hospital. Confused by the new world surrounding him, he attempts to convince the staff he’s from another time, only to find they think him mad.

Rescued by friends, who, to his surprise, have also come through time, he must find a way to function in this odd modern England. He is quickly enchanted by the kind Esme Crippen, the young woman hired to tutor him. She too is enchanted by him. Tempted to deepen the relationship, she hesitates thinking him adorable, but mad. He must discover the means for getting her to believe the truth, all the while, unknown to him, he didn’t come forward in time alone. The enemy knight has also traveled to 2013.

French noble, Roger Marchand, doesn’t question why the English knight who charged him hesitated. That fraction of a pause gave him the advantage needed and he brought his sword down upon the Englishman’s helmet hard, unhorsing the knight. He moved to finish the Englishman off when the world changed in a rush of sensations as he is ripped through time.

Seeking a reason for the terrible event, he enters a nearby chapel. There, thinking God has chosen him for a quest to turn French defeat that day in 1356 to victory, he sets out to find the English knight. The man he is convinced holds the key to time. If he returns to the day of the battle, he can warn his king of mistakes that snatched victory from them.

~~~~~~~~~~
Knight Blindness is the first book I’ve read by Chris Karlsen. Although part of the Knights in Time series, it was very easy to read as a stand alone novel. The cast of characters is strong and the writing very clear and concise. It was well researched and the 14th century attributes seem quite authentic.
Two battling knights are thrust into the 21st century just as Marchand strikes the blow that blinds Stephen. Stephen has the added challenge of learning to navigate a completely foreign world and all the changed technology while completely blind. Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen reminds me of a fairy tale in reverse and the heroine rescues her shining knight in distress.
While I was disappointed with the abrupt ending, it sets up perfectly a fourth novel featuring Marchand and his lady fair. I recommend Knight Blindness to all interested in time travel romance and look forward to reading the previous two books and perhaps many more!
Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00012]“Quinn?”
“Huh?”
I blinked back into focus and found Travis in the doorway. My heart lifted at the sight of him. “Travis?”
“You’ve been staring at the wall for over a minute.” He frowned. “What happened to your face?”
“I fell,” I told the desk after averting my eyes.
Travis came and stood in my space. He crouched down and cupped my face, examining the injury. “When?”
“Is that important?” I could feel his breath on my face, and I wanted him so much. Sheer agony speared through me, and I closed my eyes against the force. His touch on my forehead was gentle, and I jerked my head back. “It’s just a graze. What are you doing here?”
Travis sighed, and it was weighted with so many unsaid words that I knew he didn’t know where to start. “You know why I’m here.”
Of course I knew.
“Don’t stand so close,” I said firmly but he must have heard something else coming out of my mouth because he didn’t move.
“Quinn,” he breathed, and the depth of emotion in that single word tugged at my heart. “I can’t let you do this.”
Travis held my eyes, but I couldn’t reply because suddenly his lips were on mine. My mouth opened underneath the onslaught, moaning at the taste of him. He lifted me off the chair, and I hung on as he spun me around and pushed me up against the desk.
“Stop,” I choked out when his mouth left mine to nibble on my ear.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” I moaned as his teeth bit into my skin. “No.”
God help me, but I couldn’t push him away. I wasn’t strong enough and he was relentless. His hands were all over me, pushing under clothes and grabbing at bare skin. I slid my own underneath his shirt, tugging on the waistband of his jeans to drag him closer. His mouth returned to mine and my hand came around his neck, holding him there so he wouldn’t take it away.
“Oh that shit is not cool. So not cool.” Mac’s voice registered through the fog, and I pulled back, rubbing my lips together.
Travis took a step back, his hair mussed, and cleared his throat. “We were just ah…sorting the security detail for the Melbourne trip.”
I sat up, straightening my shirt, my entire body heating with embarrassment when I saw Jared smirking at both of us from over Mac’s shoulder.
“That’s Jared’s department, yet here you are, all over it like a rash. I’m not fooled. I can bet by the way you had Quinn spread out all over that desk she isn’t fooled either.”
Jared folded his arms and raised a brow. “Nice one, Trav.”
Mac spun around with wide eyes and pointed in his face. “One word, Jared. Bedroom. Not the pantry, not the couch, not the shower. Bedroom.”
He held up his hands. “No idea what you’re talking about,” he muttered and disappeared.
“Hurry up and finish your fumigating because I’m tired of you and your shitty food in my house!” she yelled after him.
“It’s Sunday,” she growled and slammed the coffee in her hand on the desk as she sat down, “but you’re here so let’s get this shit done, and then you both can get down to other business.” She pursed her lips but I could see the curve in them as though satisfied that whatever happened last night was now over.
I swallowed and looked at Travis. Soon it would be.
After the fall of Aden and his followers, Michael was taken to HaloCity to heal. Not only did Michael had a difficult time settling into his new environment, he had conflicting issues regarding his past. Upon meeting the alkins, a particular one by the name of Davin refused to give up on helping him deal with his struggles. Together, they discovered a strange being that would appear at the Crossroads at unexpected times. Souls wandering there is nothing new, but this one aged as time passed. Mystified, they both searched for answers while refraining from telling the Twelve about her. Who is this being that had enraptured Michael’s attention? And will Michael finally forgive himself and find the happiness that he yearned to have?
Good Intentions by D.N. Simmons
GIwebsmallScitech Labs was handsomely commissioned by the United States Military to design a revolutionary serum that would create the ultimate soldier.  If successful, the soldier would have an increase in endurance, strength, awareness and overall speed. They would become the true super soldier. That’s if everything went according to plan.
Scitech put its best scientists on the project and gave them a time limit to complete the job or else. With the pressure on and the stakes high, Vincent Masterson and his team put everything they had into the project. . Everything was looking hopeful until an experiment went horribly wrong. The scientists mutated their specimen’s DNA, turning it into something monstrous. Now, life as we know it will never be the same.
As it stands, the only thing that can save them is one of the two things they should be running from.
Can the human race survive being caught in a bloody war between two vicious predators?
Enhanced: Chapter 1
     The door slammed open and a team of white-coated technicians filed grimly into the classroom. Michelle Atherton automatically relaxed her face into the expressionless mask Enhanced offspring used to greet any bad news, but under her desk, her fingers gripped each other hard enough to hurt. The techs lined up against the wall, arms folded and jaws set in identical hard lines. They stared over her head, refusing to make eye contact with anyone. Doctor Williams came in last, rolling a gurney outfitted with sturdy nylon straps. He parked it behind the last row of chairs, and teenagers twisted in their seats to stare. Pressure rose in Michelle’s throat like a scream, but she didn’t dare make a sound.Williams dismissed Professor Cole with a perfunctory twitch of his jowly chin. In agonizingly slow motion, the old teacher set the stack of standardized tests down on her desk and walked stiffly from the room. Williams closed the door after her. The click of the latch made Michelle flinch.
“Seth Atherton,” Doctor Williams said.
Blood rushed from Michelle’s head.
Michelle’s seventeen-year-old brother stood up. “Sir?”
“You have been selected for a…procedure.” Williams motioned Seth to the gurney. “Come with us.”
“What procedure?” Seth’s voice sounded calm and polite, as always, but everyone knew what he was thinking. People selected for procedures didn’t always come back.
Williams didn’t answer–not that anyone expected him to. At the doctor’s gesture, a couple of male technicians stepped up and locked eyes with the rangy dark-haired boy. The bigger one, a swarthy young man with thighs like tree trunks, pointed Michelle’s brother toward the gurney. Seth stood his ground.
He turned to Doctor Williams. “I’ll cooperate, sir. You don’t need the stretcher, I can walk.”
Technicians drifted from the wall like wraiths, slowly surrounding him. Michelle’s head felt like it floated a little way above her body, as if somehow it wasn’t quite connected. Objects in the room had bright edges, and the coats of the technicians gleamed in brilliant, painful white. Her brother’s strong hand gripped her shoulder, but she didn’t remember getting out of her chair. He pulled her close and leaned down to whisper.
“Michelle.” Seth’s eyes were so dilated that they almost looked black. Narrow rings of indigo surrounded the reflective pools of darkness. “Don’t do this. You have a chance to grow up here, become a breeder. I…I just can’t watch you walk out the gate alone.”
She stared at him with wide eyes, and slowly nodded. Seth inclined his head in that unconsciously noble way of his, and the technicians fell back, making room. His fingers gripped Michelle’s arm. Pain dimly penetrated her nightmare, so she let her brother walk her a couple of steps and press her back down in her chair.
“Stay here, Michelle. I’ll be fine.”
Michelle blinked hard at the tears that threatened to shame them both. “Sure. You’ll…be fine.”
Seth nodded once and turned away. He strode to the gurney, climbed aboard and stretched out on his back. With sharp metallic clicks, technicians ratcheted down the straps.
They rolled him away.
The teens sat for a moment in stunned silence before the whispering began. “I can’t believe they’re culling him!” Sylvia blurted.
“That’s not how it’s done,” Jeanette said disdainfully. “They didn’t line us up at the gate, and besides, with his scores, that’s not going to happen.”
“Maybe they don’t like his attitude,” said Seth’s best friend Brian. “The way he plays the system.”
Michelle glanced sharply at the big blond-haired senior. “You mean the way you both—”
The door opened again and the technicians came back in with a second wheeled stretcher.
Carissa’s face blanched as the technicians marched toward her. “It’s me, I knew it.”       The tawny-haired girl stumbled out of her chair and squeezed behind Brian’s broad back, like that could save her. He murmured to her softly and reached up to cover her hand with his.
“Brian Halstead,” the swarthy tech said, flexing his thick shoulders in an unspoken challenge. Carissa’s breath caught audibly in her throat.
Brian stood up slowly, with the oiled grace of a predator. “Yes, sir.”
He emphasized the word a little and the tech’s eyes narrowed. Nobody called technicians sir. A little smirk played along the corners of Brian’s mouth. He took a step or two toward the gurney, but hesitated by Michelle’s chair until she looked up.
“For Seth,” Brian whispered, giving her a wicked little smile.
Michelle sat up straight and scanned the white-coats. Doctor Williams had gone, leaving a bunch of low ranking techs to deal with Brian alone. Big mistake. What’s he going to do?
As Brian sauntered down the aisle, people in the back of the classroom scooted out of their chairs and clustered in front by Professor Cole’s desk. That should have alerted the technicians, but it didn’t.
“Clearly, there’s a reason that they’re only technicians,” Jeanette Morley said, right out loud, and her girlfriends giggled.
“Get on the stretcher,” the burly technician growled at Brian.
Brian grinned. “Thanks, but I’m not interested in participating.”
“It’s not optional.”
“That’s not the way I see it.” Brian cocked his head and waited until the tech made the mistake of grabbing his arm.
“I turned eighteen last fall,” Brian said, and the guy let go fast. It was too late.
With both hands, Brian lifted the stretcher off its wheels and slammed its edge into the man’s stomach. The swarthy one went down, along with another white-coat with the bad luck to be standing next to him. Techs swarmed the big blond-haired teenager, trying to overcome him by sheer numbers. Michelle cheered along with the rest of the class when Brian made a hole in the drywall with some guy’s head, but a petite female nurse snuck up behind him with a syringe.
“Look out, behind you!” screamed Carissa.
Brian slumped horribly to the floor, and four white-coated men lifted his body onto the stretcher. They rolled him away while Michelle wrapped her arms around herself and shook. After the last technician filed out, Doctor Williams stuck his head in, surveyed the damaged wall with a slightly sick expression, and then closed the door like a dog owner making sure his pets didn’t get out.
Jeanette laughed until her face turned pink. “Did you see how Brian set that up? The Conclave can’t touch him for that!”
“What!” Michelle snapped.
“Don’t you get anything, Michelle?” Jeanette rolled her eyes. “Brian’s eighteen. Technically that makes him an adult, whether he’s finished high school or not. With the scores he gets, he outranks every technician at the Institute. He doesn’t have to follow their orders.”
“So when he wakes up from whatever sick experiment they’re doing on him, they can’t punish him any worse. Sure, that’s just hysterical, Jeanette. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much.” Michelle abruptly fell silent when the door opened once again.
This time, when they came, they came for her.
Michelle trembled on the exam table in the Genetics Clinic. A puncture wound in her leg slowly dripped blood onto the polished floor, but she ignored it. Technicians were testing the biopsied muscle segment, and Norms existed to clean up the mess. A child sobbed softly on the other side of the wall.
Don’t go. Doctor Salomon could walk in any second, Michelle told herself, crumpling her disposable hospital shift in sweaty hands. But he won’t, another part of her mind whispered, the buried part that knew exactly what Salomon was doing in the room next door. He’s not finished with her yet. Michelle fidgeted on the paper-covered bench, trying to repress the thought. She smoothed away the telltale wrinkles in the horrible white paper poncho, but they’d be able to tell. They could always tell.
Michelle tucked her chin and wrapped her arms across her flat stomach, as though she could hide under her veil of long dark hair. The antiseptic scent of the clinic always twisted her guts into a knot. Suddenly she pushed off the table, landing barefoot on the freezing cold tiles. Crimson droplets of blood marked her passage toward the door, but the bleeding quickly stopped. In another hour the wound would be completely healed. She hesitated, calculating the odds. Can I go find Seth and get back before Salomon does? Not likely. But if I don’t, I’ll go crazy.
Michelle eyed the closed door, considering escape. But escape was only for the losers who got culled. Brian claimed that would be a relief, but he tried as hard as anyone to avoid it. No one knew what happened to the culls after they were dumped in the slum. They probably live out there like kings, ruling over the Norms. Even a cull could out compete them.
In a savage motion Michelle tore off her paper shift and let the fragments drift to the floor. Glaring surgical light reflected off her sleek muscles, golden skin, and the flawless features of her face. She snatched up her clothes as fast as she could. A child’s shrill scream paralyzed her with one leg in her pants.
Doctor Salomon’s voice rumbled through the wall, taking that quietly insistent tone he used with little girls. “Be quiet, Jennifer, or I’ll bring one of your sisters in here instead. Is that what you want?”
Michelle took a ragged gasp as everything she’d tried so hard to forget flooded to the surface. She yanked on her clothes and skidded across the floor in her socks. The door had been locked from outside. She rattled the doorknob frantically, but no one came. The child next door got louder, and something in there crashed to the floor. The little girl’s hysterical pleading shifted into a high-pitched scream. A man bellowed, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone being slapped hard with an open hand.
“Help, help!” Michelle pounded on the door and twisted the doorknob so hard that the metal itself sheared and broke off in her hand.
She half expected to hear nurses’ running feet, but no one came. Without thinking, she kicked the door open, bolted into the hall and slammed a shoulder into the closed door of the next room. It unexpectedly flew open, and Michelle tripped over an overturned chair just inside. She crashed to the floor and whipped her head around, but the doctor was already gone. A red-haired girl about nine years old peered over the edge of the exam table. A sore pink handprint stood up across the child’s face. Blood speckled the front of her little paper poncho.
Michelle scrambled to her feet, feeling stupid. She reached gently for the child, who flinched away. “Jennie? Sara? Which one are you? Um, sorry,” Michelle trailed off, embarrassed. Everyone else seemed to be able to tell the triplets apart.
“I’m Jennie.”
“Easy, Jennie. I won’t hurt you. You’re bleeding.”
“It’s not my blood,” the little redhead said, her blue eyes flashing defiantly. “I bit him.”
Michelle couldn’t help laughing, but she stifled the sound behind her hands. Around here, anyone could be listening. “Good. He had it coming, I’m sure.”
The child slid off the table, clutching her paper shift tightly to her chest with both tiny fists. “He told me he had to check and see if I had cancer, you know, inside.”
“Oh, that’s–” Michelle cut herself off before blurting, “just what he used to tell me.” Instead she said, “That’s not true. The Enhanced can’t get cancer, sweetie. That flaw got bred out generations ago.”
Jennie bit her lip, trying not to cry. “He lied.”
Michelle squatted down to get on eye level with the little girl. “Yeah, he did. So tell your mom right away.”
“They showed her the gate when I was a baby.” An angry tear escaped down Jennie’s cheek, but she flushed and quickly wiped it away. Michelle politely pretended not to notice.
The little redhead crept in to whisper. “You shouldn’t try to help me. You know what he’ll do.”
Michelle went cold, imagining the consequences. “I know, but I heard you scream, and…”
Jennie surprised her by giving her a hug. “Don’t be stupid, Michelle. It’s bad here, but it’s worse Outside.”
Michelle walked down the hall alone, feeling like a prisoner about to face the firing squad. A couple of young male technicians chatted outside the surgical suite. They’d know she had no business in there, and with her genetically enhanced IQ, getting lost wasn’t an excuse. She smiled a little, trying not to look guilty as her heart pounded. Their eyes roamed over her body, but they stepped aside to let her pass. Michelle was an Atherton, after all, the daughter of not only one, but two members of the Conclave. That made her royalty here. At least until my first citation for noncompliance.
Michelle glanced over her shoulder at the men, pretending to check them out. They winked and leered, and laughed when she blushed. She bent her head over her papers as though double-checking a room number and pushed through the double doors. She held her breath, expecting them to stop her. They didn’t. Michelle slowed her stride at the receptionist’s desk, hoping Seth’s mysterious procedure would be listed on the computer there. A young female receptionist sat behind the clear plastic counter. The brunette’s short legs and pudgy body gave her away as an Augment, a Norm enhanced only enough to qualify her for a job. Augments instinctively obeyed orders from Enhanced adults, but not from the kids. Am I old enough? Will she tell me?
Salomon’s petulant voice came from an office opposite the receptionist’s desk, making Michelle forget all about the little brunette. “You’re worthless, Williams! I can’t leave you alone for a minute. That’s why you’re still a technician, so stop asking.”
The door opened and Michelle ducked around a corner, but caved in to the temptation to peek. Doctor Salomon emerged, trailed by Doctor Williams, the eternal technician. The unfortunate man took shallow breaths, sucking in his tubby stomach, but it still made him look like a Norm.
The small white-haired director poked a bandaged finger at Williams’ face. “All you had to do was remain in the room, but apparently that was too complicated for you. Those damages are coming out of your paycheck. Now I’m late for surgery, and you’re assisting.”
“Thank you for the opportunity, sir,” the balding technician said. His eyes remained downcast, but a note of hope crept into his voice.
Salomon’s overpowering cologne drifted around the corner and stung Michelle’s throat. It smelled like pain. She pushed off the wall and hurried away. Ahead, a line of Enhanced offspring waited for Augment security guards to inspect their documents. She abruptly changed direction and rushed down another corridor, fighting down panic. Sweat began to soak through her blouse, and her breath came in rapid gasps. Orderlies scooted out of her way, and one of them flicked his wrist, activating his implanted cell chip. Is he calling security? Michelle fought against the wave of irrational terror, but had no hope. She dodged a couple of white-uniformed nurses and gave in to the impulse to run.
Anxiety disorders sometimes manifested in kids selected for extremely high IQs, and doctors doggedly rooted out the flaw. Most of the other carriers had already been selected for procedures. Speaking their names was forbidden, so it felt safer to forget them. Michelle brought their faces to mind in a desperate bid for self-control. The little brown-haired girl who used to cry on the high ropes course–that one never made it past fifth grade. The freckle-faced seventh-grade boy who got eliminated when he refused a two-on-one sparring match in karate class. The images of the lost slowed her headlong rush, but not quickly enough.
A group of students crowded the hall around the corner. Michelle careened sideways, slammed a hand loudly against the wall, and plowed right into Jeanette Morley, of all people. Beauty wasn’t the goal at the Institute, but Jeanette sure acted like it was. The team that designed her pulled out all the stops, giving her a slender, sculpted body, large breasts, and blonde hair that cascaded down her back. Looks weren’t supposed to count here, but they did, especially when it came to influencing people.
The blonde shoved Michelle away and then started ripping her a new spleen. “Yeah, instead of arriving on time, go ahead and run us all over, you cull. God, Michelle, you’re so…Normal. No wonder you have no friends.”
“I’m her friend,” Carissa said softly, stepping between Jeanette and Michelle with a visible effort.
“Thanks, Carissa,” Michelle told the mousy girl, trying to be kind. “I’m your friend too.”
“Low-ranks and recruits.” Jeanette gave Carissa a critical once-over and rolled her eyes. “Like they count. I guess, if that’s the best you can do.”
Jeanette’s younger brother Todd wove through the crowd, slipping easily between the muscular boys. On him, the genes that gave Jeanette her delicate beauty just looked scrawny. “Hey, Michelle. Worried you’d be late?”
“Um, yeah.” Michelle peeled a sweaty curl off her forehead and looked back down the hall. No one followed, and she felt like an idiot for losing control.
Todd took her by the elbow and guided her to the wall. His touch calmed her pounding heart. “This test isn’t for freshmen,” he murmured, almost inaudibly, but she heard him through her bones. “What are you doing here?”
She didn’t answer. His eyes searched hers as he lightly lifted the truth from her mind. “Oh. Living dangerously.”
“Get out of my head, witch!” Michelle snapped, way too loud, but Todd only laughed in that wheezing nerdy way of his.
He put his mouth to her ear and whispered. “They’re in outpatient surgery, room seven.”
“Thanks! I’ve got to go, I’m not supposed to…” Michelle faltered and fell silent.
“Obviously,” Todd smirked. “Get going before the wrong people notice.” He shot a fast glance at his sister, who clustered with her followers.
Michelle turned away and stepped on someone’s foot. “Oh, I’m sorry,” she said, and then saw who she’d crunched. A green-uniformed Norm hurriedly pulled his laundry cart out of her way. Sniggers broke out among the teens and Michelle blushed. One didn’t speak to Norms, except to give instructions. Apologizing to them was unheard of. They were little more than animals, and they wouldn’t understand.
“My fault, Miss,” the small black-haired Norm mumbled, eyes respectfully downcast. A muscle on the young man’s jaw clenched and released, and he cast a glance of veiled hatred toward the smirking crowd of kids. Michelle wouldn’t have thought a Norm would know when he was being laughed at, but this one obviously did. A flush of anger rose to her cheeks, but her glare didn’t stop her classmates’ giggles. Suddenly she hated them too.
“It wasn’t your fault!” Michelle blurted, startling the pimple-faced boy into meeting her eyes for a second. “I ran into you.”
The entire hallway fell silent as the Normal teenager flushed under the scrutiny of dozens of impossibly beautiful Enhanced. Michelle shrugged apologetically, and the worker surprised her with a wry grin. Mentally kicking herself for attracting attention, she slipped around a corner and walked away.
One advantage of breaking rules when no one else did was that authorities never expected it. In the outpatient surgery wing, nurses and orderlies bustled everywhere, but no one noticed one girl standing against the wall. Michelle peeked through the tiny window in the door of room seven. Her brother sat rigidly on an exam table. Seth’s handsome face remained impassive, but he kept running a hand through his hair, making it stand on end. He stopped when Salomon walked in. Williams followed, carrying a tray shrouded under a blue surgical cloth. Instead of asking, the chubby technician just put a hand on Seth’s chest and shoved him down on the table. Two thick nylon straps pinned the boy on his back. Salomon chose a gleaming silver scalpel from his tray.
Seth averted his eyes from the scalpel and spotted his sister standing in the doorway. A flicker of fear crossed his face, quickly masked. The doctor bent over the boy’s arm and made a quick incision without bothering to numb it first. Seth’s night-blue eyes glazed with pain, but he didn’t even twitch when the doctor pulled the edges of the incision wide and used a couple of stainless-steel clamps to hold it open. Michelle couldn’t look at the blood dripping down her brother’s arm, and focused on his dark eyes instead. They looked strange to her, too old for his young face.
When Salomon turned away to open an incubator, Seth mouthed something at her. It took Michelle a moment to make out her brother’s words. “Go! Before you get one too!”
“One what?” she mouthed back, just as Salomon returned to Seth’s side. The petite gray-haired man now wore a surgical mask, and he cradled something carefully in his gloved hands. He glanced up and Michelle recoiled just in time, jerking back around the corner. That did it. A suspicious middle-aged nurse strode toward her, elbowing aside some low-ranking aids and a Normal janitor. Clutching her fake documents to her chest, Michelle fled.
Courtney Farrell was once a molecular biologist, but her habit of daydreaming destroyed far too many experiments. As it turned out, writing down the movies behind her eyes was a lot more fun than lab work. Courtney is the author of fourteen nonfiction books for young people, mostly on social and environmental topics. She lives with her family on a Colorado ranch where they support a barn full of freeloading animals, including a fat draft horse and a bunch of crazy chickens. Enhanced is her first novel.
EXCERPT:
“Ow! Son of a bitch!” What the hell had she stepped on? Bending over, she looked down to find a large shard of a shell sticking up out of the sand. Damn it! She picked up her right foot to inspect it and watched as droplets of blood mixed in with the crushed shells and cigarette butts. Well, isn’t this just grand? So much for starting out on the right foot. The cut on her sole bled profusely, and she wasn’t quite sure how to staunch it other than cover it with her shirt. Thank goodness she’d worn a bathing suit underneath her clothes. But how to get back to her house? She snorted. Good question, Hope. Now what’s the answer?
She looked around for anyone that might be as crazy as she for coming out so early, but not a soul joined her. Great. Now what? Her foot throbbed in rhythm with her heart. She needed to get it washed, bandaged, and up in the air quickly. She searched around again, this time to see how close any of the beach houses were that dotted past the dunes. The one nearest had sea green shingles and a white wrap around porch. It had a very non-assuming and friendly look. She’d been judged by the book covers she created, so she figured the house may very well be a good reflection of its owner.
Hobbling through the sand and up the dunes gave her quite a workout. Every step she took made her wince and left a little token of her affection for the sea, a bloody footprint. Her once white tank top now wrapped clumsily around her foot, boasted a horrid shade of deep red. She reached the apex of the sand hill and saw the silhouette of a person sitting on the porch.
“Hello? Hello!” She waved her arms high in the air. “Excuse me; I could use a little help. I’ve cut my foot and I’m bleeding like a stuck pig.” The blob didn’t move. Did she mistake an outdoor statue for a person? She hoped not because she felt like crap at this point. Gathering her energy, Hope drew in a deep breath and projected her voice. “Excuse me! Can you help me, please? Hello? Oh….”
The world according to Hope whirled around her and spun out of control. Her body crumbled and rolled down the dune toward the house. Abruptly, all went dark.
***
She soared through the clouds, catching the wind beneath her wings. Coming out of her fog, she realized instead that someone had been carrying her and walking at the same time. But who? Her brain swam like when she’d twirled a hundred times on the grass as a child. Opening her eyes, she looked up at her savior and thought she must still be in “La La Land.” A strong jawline, a straight nose, and five o’clock shadow graced the profile of a Greek god. A hairband captured dark brown hair at the base of his neck. Her foot twitched and she groaned.
“Easy now, I’ve got you. My name is James White and I’m just gonna bring you onto my porch to see to that foot of yours.”
“Oh, thank you, James. I’m Hope Evans. I don’t feel so well. I stepped on a shell. My foot is cut real bad.” Her head fell back onto his chest like a rag doll.
“Hi there, Hope. Don’t worry. I’m certified.” He laid her gently on a chaise lounge, grabbed a few pillows from some other chairs and placed them under her foot. “I’ll be right back. I need to get my first aid kit, and I think a cup of OJ for you to drink might help, too.” His smile reassured her that all would be well. He ducked inside giving her a chance to look around. She’d missed most of the sun rise, but she didn’t care anymore. Due to a kindhearted fellow, she’d found an angel at dawn instead.
