Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen

KnightBlindness HighRes
Ready for battle, Medieval English knight, Stephen Palmer, charges into the French enemy’s cavalry line. Heeding a warning given months before, he hesitates as he comes face-to-face with the knight in the warning. Struck down in the year 1356, he finds himself landing in the year 2013. Grievously wounded, he’s taken to a nearby hospital. Confused by the new world surrounding him, he attempts to convince the staff he’s from another time, only to find they think him mad.

Rescued by friends, who, to his surprise, have also come through time, he must find a way to function in this odd modern England. He is quickly enchanted by the kind Esme Crippen, the young woman hired to tutor him. She too is enchanted by him. Tempted to deepen the relationship, she hesitates thinking him adorable, but mad. He must discover the means for getting her to believe the truth, all the while, unknown to him, he didn’t come forward in time alone. The enemy knight has also traveled to 2013.

French noble, Roger Marchand, doesn’t question why the English knight who charged him hesitated. That fraction of a pause gave him the advantage needed and he brought his sword down upon the Englishman’s helmet hard, unhorsing the knight. He moved to finish the Englishman off when the world changed in a rush of sensations as he is ripped through time.

Seeking a reason for the terrible event, he enters a nearby chapel. There, thinking God has chosen him for a quest to turn French defeat that day in 1356 to victory, he sets out to find the English knight. The man he is convinced holds the key to time. If he returns to the day of the battle, he can warn his king of mistakes that snatched victory from them.

Knight Blindness is the first book I’ve read by Chris Karlsen. Although part of the Knights in Time series, it was very easy to read as a stand alone novel. The cast of characters is strong and the writing very clear and concise. It was well researched and the 14th century attributes seem quite authentic.

Two battling knights are thrust into the 21st century just as Marchand strikes the blow that blinds Stephen. Stephen has the added challenge of learning to navigate a completely foreign world and all the changed technology while completely blind. Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen reminds me of a fairy tale in reverse and the heroine rescues her shining knight in distress.

While I was disappointed with the abrupt ending, it sets up perfectly a fourth novel featuring Marchand and his lady fair. I recommend Knight Blindness to all interested in time travel romance and look forward to reading the previous two books and perhaps many more!

SONY DSCI was born and raised in Chicago. My father was a history professor and my mother was, and is, a voracious reader. I grew up with a love of history and books.

My parents also love traveling, a passion they passed onto me. I wanted to see the places I read about, see the land and monuments from the time periods that fascinated me. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.

I am a retired police detective. I spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. My desire to write came in my early teens. After I retired, I decided to pursue that dream. I write two different series. My paranormal romance series is called, Knights in Time. My romantic thriller series is, Dangerous Waters.

I currently live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, four rescue dogs and a rescue horse.

The fallen coming out of hiding is not a concern; there are those who want to be left alone. However, one particular fallen, Dantanian, is hungry for revenge. Being one of God’s first fallen angels, he is the evilest of his kind, known as an angel of many faces. He will do anything to get his way, even if it means forcing others to join him. And he will stop at nothing to get Michael on his side.

Dantanian will torture, kill for pleasure, and concoct evil schemes to get Michael’s attention; and once in his hands, he will try to destroy all the happiness Michael fought so hard to gain. Having no support from the Twelve, and with Claudia temporarily losing her powers, the venators and the alkins must work together once again to save their friends. As death draws near to those captured by Dantanian, will the gang reach them in time? Or will Michael return to the dark angel he once was and destroy everyone he loves?

Title: HaloCity: Michael’s Journey
Author: Mary Ting
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Halo City CoverWhen a massive group of angels known as nephilim—half human, half angel—had been found by the Royal Council, they were taken to HaloCity. Instead of cleansing the Earth with a flood, which had been done before, the Royal Council created a place just for this group of angels. While they were being taken, one of the Twelve, named Aden, rebelled and convinced many alkins to join his cause—to live freely among the humans and take over Crossroads.

After the fall of Aden and his followers, Michael was taken to HaloCity to heal. Not only did Michael had a difficult time settling into his new environment, he had conflicting issues regarding his past. Upon meeting the alkins, a particular one by the name of Davin refused to give up on helping him deal with his struggles. Together, they discovered a strange being that would appear at the Crossroads at unexpected times. Souls wandering there is nothing new, but this one aged as time passed. Mystified, they both searched for answers while refraining from telling the Twelve about her. Who is this being that had enraptured Michael’s attention? And will Michael finally forgive himself and find the happiness that he yearned to have?

Mary Ting resides in Southern California with her husband and two children. She enjoys oil painting and making jewelry. Writing her first novel, Crossroads Saga, happened by chance. It was a way to grieve the death of her beloved grandmother, and inspired by a dream she once had as a young girl. When she started reading new adult novels, she fell in love with the genre. It was the reason she had to write one. Why the pen name, M Clarke? She tours with Magic Johnson Foundation to promote literacy and her children’s chapter book, No Bullies Allowed.

Excerpt:

~Nari~

I pushed him back against the wall by his taut chest, never disconnecting my lips from his, and kissed him like I was starving for this one thing. Starving for him.

And I so was.

I couldn’t breathe, and I didn’t care. There was nothing else in this world but him and me, and I soaked it up like a dry sponge. He nipped my lip at the same time his hand savored the bare skin at the small of my back under my shirt.

It sent a rush of blood to every nook and corner of my body, giving me a euphoric high. I pressed myself further against him, but it wasn’t enough.

And I knew he felt the same when he slid his hands over my backside down to the inside of my thighs, picking me up off the ground. I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist and let him lay me down along the cold, hard rock below.

I wanted him. So badly, I wanted him. Desire pooled in my gut, just for him. And I could feel he wanted me just as badly. I grinned against his hot lips and suppressed a giggle—knowing the others were just an earshot away.

We Roam the Seas by Theresa Marguerite Hewitt

we roam cover

The warm late summer breeze meets her face as Freya stands on the edge of the cliff; her eyes closed enjoying the feeling. Her home of the Shetland Islands main isle is beautiful in summer and she loves to spend her days like this; walking with her best and most trusted friend Eska.

“Your father will kill me if he knows I let you that close to the edge lass,” there is an edge of fear in the young man’s voice and Freya turns her green
eyes on her friend, seeing his slightly taller than her frame standing with his arms crossed over his bare muscular chest. She just gives him a smile and
shakes her head, turning her face back out to the sea and watching the waves crash into the grey stone of the cliffs.

Her father is always over protective of her, but even more so since she was twelve and her mother died of the fever. That was twelve summers ago and Freya is still working on getting her freedom from her Chief father, Ivan the Good, and her five older brothers. The thought of her mother and brothers makes her frown and her outstretched arms fall to her sides, swishing in her already dirty, simple brown dress with her favorite green apron holding in the young apples she has gathered.

Two of her brothers, Folkvar and Hoakon, helped her father rule the main isle with little villages of their own posted on the northern and southern points
while the other three brothers, Lund, Rune and Arik, held posts on two of the out skirting islands; a first line in defense if they should be attacked. Their
islands have been peaceful ever since before Freya was born and since her mother’s death, her father has let priests from the east introduce Christianity
to his people; mingling the teaching with those of their traditional Gods.

She takes a long look out over the waves, taking in the salty smell and the everlasting call of the seagulls, smiling to herself as she turns to her friend. “My father will be fine because what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right Eska?” She smiles, lightly slapping him on the shoulder as his brown eyes track her movement past him.

Being a son of former slaves in England, Eska was only a toddler when Ivan had taken his parents from their home and brought them back here on the last of his raiding trips. He carries the slight Scottish accent that his parents passed down to him along with the blonde hair from his mother. As he smiles and shakes his head, following his friend as she walks down the path away from the cliff, he takes in her scent as the wind blows it slowly to him.

Being of lower birth, Eska should not love her, but he does. He has loved her since the day he first saw her cuddled in a bear skin playing with a doll in the great hall at her father’s feet. They have been inseparable since. His parents have told him numerous times to move on and marry a girl of his own status, a nice farmer girl, one from the village but he doesn’t want any of the plump, already deflowered girls. He wants the petite yet curvy, strong willed,
reddish-brown haired daughter of the Chief and has asked Ivan for her hand in marriage twice over, being turned down apologetically each time.

“I’m sorry son, but she is not ready to be married. Her soul still sails in the wind and roams the waves,” Ivan had told him both times, his massive worn hand on Eska’s shoulder, squeezing it caringly like a father. He has treated Eska’s family well, giving them a home and throwing work at his father when they needed the help. Ivan is a good leader, but Eska wishes that he would see that he too, can be a great man and husband to his daughter.

“Eska!” the urgent sound of his name brings him from his musing and mindless following of the one who holds his heart and he casts his brown eyes up, his chin length blonde hair sweeping across his eyes as he finds Freya standing on her tip toes, looking over the edge of a stone wall.

“What is it lass?” he asks, coming to stand at her side and seeing her eyes cast out over the waves once more. Yellow and blue striped sails catch his eye
and he sees the longboats docked on their beach with men mingling around them. His eyes narrow and his ears strain, trying to hear what they are laughing at but the wind carries it away.

“My father didn’t say anything about expecting a landing today?” Freya questioned as a slight fear settled in her heart. The men on the beach had swords at their waists and battle axes strapped on their backs. Their shields lined the sides of their boats, four boats in total, and as they unloaded supplies onto the stony beach of her home, her heart stuttered.

She turns her green eyes to her friend, her long hair blowing across her face as she sees Eska’s head shake. That was the only sign she needed, pushing
herself from the stone wall as the fear and adrenaline mixed in her veins, sending her heart racing. Her legs propel her forward as she picks up her
dress, not wanting to trip as she runs down the worn cart path.

Insights by Lauren Klever

Title: Insights (The Secret Watchers, Book Three)

Author: Lauren Klever

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy Action and Adventure

Release Date: August 26, 2013

Cover Reveal Host: Lady Amber’s Tours

Insights eCover

The adventures of Owen Ryer and friends continue in this third installment of the five book series.  Dark watchers want to steal his powers and they will stop at nothing to get what they want.  From kidnapping to murder – When is enough, enough?  Can Owen defend the ones he loves or is all hope lost as he battles the greatest evil he has ever known?

Owen thinks he’s battle-hardened.  He has firm control of his gifts and his own watcher to train, yet with two years of experience behind him things are not getting any easier.  As Owen grows in experience, so does the darkness and danger.  Lucie is taken, making Owen realize just how much she really means to him, but is it her the dark watchers want or is she only the bait in an elaborate trap?

Author profile 5 cropI’ve always been a writer but let me tell you, it’s lots more fun when I can make the choices about where a story is going.  I’m also a teacher so I get that we have to have students meet certain criteria, but as a kid… I hated being told what to write.  The good side of growing up is that you can write whatever you want.  The down side… Now I can’t read it without my glasses!

My Secret Watchers series is about young Owen Ryer who discovers he has a special talent for seeing the darker side of life.  The things he is driven to do are not only dangerous but have to be kept a secret.  I sat down with my boys and began brainstorming based on some of our favorite characters from literature.  Wizards, vampires, werewolves, and the son of a god had already been done… so what was left?  Hello, special ability!  Mix in some unique features, some good friends, a strong mentor, helpful adults and voilà, I hope a star is born!  I’ve never been bitten by the writing bug with such vengeance and book one was completed in only six weeks!  Ten weeks later book two was complete and I’m now finishing book three and at work on book four with plans for five books in the series.

Personally, I’m drawn to all things ‘action-adventure’ in film and literature.  Notice I didn’t say ‘real life’?  No bungee jumping, cliff diving or parkour for me.  I’d likely kill myself as I’m a klutz.  Skydiving? Nope!  I’d be the one to fall out of the plane without a parachute.  My oldest and I have taken karate together and I’ve spent hours watching both boys participate in a variety of sports, including parkour, without incident, unless of course you count occasional broken toes.  I have created a character who is much braver, tougher and more graceful than I am.

It’s my wish that you, the reader, have at least half as much fun and connection to these characters as I have as I wrote them!  These books are for my family, friends, students and mentors.  Big hugs for you all!  We can be better – together!  Relax, enjoy and dream big!  Only you know what your tomorrows can hold!

Dance With the Enemy by Linda Boulanger

Dance With the Enemy by Linda Boulanger

From the very first words I found myself lost in the story of Dance With the Enemy. For me it is an “Oh my goodness” book. I haven’t read romance novels in a number of years because they had become so “ho hum” in plot. Girl meets boy, they fall in love, something happens, and so on and so on. You know how they go. Dance With the Enemy by Linda Boulanger is anything but “ho hum”!

The idea of sailing off to meet the man you were “marked” to be with is such a romantic notion. There is one person on the earth to whom you belong, you share their blood, you will meet him and be immediately taken with him…it is every fairy tale ever written. But not in Dance With the Enemy. I won’t spoil the story for you, you really must read it for yourself!

Tahruk is a strong, powerful warrior, capable and respected in his community. Elenya is a beautiful and proud woman, filled with courage and new ideas, the hope of her people. The sparks fly from the moment the marking takes over. He chases, she runs. He softens, she balks. Their love is challenging from the very beginning. Their entire traditional way of life will come into question.

This is a novel to read, then read again as you all in love with the characters Linda Boulanger has created. Watch for the twists and turns and enjoy this beautifully written book. I am so excited by the coming of a second novel in this series later this year. Thank you, Linda, for taking the time to share your gift of the written word!

Broken Prince by Jen Wylie

Broken Prince by Jen Wylie

Broken Prince is the second book in The Broken Ones Series by Jen Wylie. I felt I needed to read book one, Broken Aro, before I could give an thorough review, and I am sure glad I did. Without the first book of the series I would have found myself frequently scratching my head.

I love to read a book series one right after the other as I am impatient while waiting for the next book to be released in a series that I love. Broken Prince proved to be no exception, but once again, it ended too soon.

Broken Prince is full of great action and adventure as Arowyn and the survivors travel from each new encounter to the next. Their quest to get Prince back to his homeland takes this group from brushes with new magical creatures and from good to evil, but each engagement adds to the depth and development of this story.

Jen Wylie is a n incredibly talented writer and Broken Prince is a pearl of a novel! I don’t wish to provide any spoilers, but Broken Prince will have you running a broad spectrum of emotions, including impatience for more!

Bravo Jen Wylie! Broken Prince is bound to be a New Adult and Fantasy bestseller.

Descent by Cameo Ranae

Descent by Cameo Renae

Descent, a prequel to the Hidden Wings Series is the perfect journey back to the beginning! It’s a captivating look into the creation of the Hidden Wings Series.

Descent connects the dots between Angels, the Fallen and a deep cast of characters. It explains the love that should never have been. It brings us through the story of how Alaine and Samuel found each other and what ripped them apart. I loved, I cried and I hated along with them all. I’m emotionally invested and can’t wait for more! Cameo Renae does it again by explaining everything so perfectly!
