BLURB:

Rescue Me - finalCan Catherine accept the consequences of a great-aunt’s dying wish without losing her heart or independence?

Taking in stray, injured or needy animals, veterinarian doctor Catherine Mornelli opens the Four Hooves and Paws Rescue program. But the land where the animals are kept is being sold. She approaches her Great-Aunt Elaine about possibly using her barn. However, visiting her aunt and checking out the barn also means seeing her ex-boyfriend.

Josef Garrison farms land that once belonged to his family for generations but went to his neighbor Elaine after his great-grandfather lost it in a poker game to Catherine’s great-grandfather. When Catherine returns, he sees a way to win back her heart and the land at the same time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Catherine met him on the steps. “I didn’t expect you here so soon.”
“Well, if there’s water in the basement, ya don’t have time to waste.” Josef walked to the back of the truck and opened the tailgate. “I brought my pump to get the water out. Then we’ll assess the damage.”
Josef wiggled his way into water waders, put a bulky roll of tubing over his shoulder and grabbed the large pumping mechanism. “I’m assuming ya haven’t gone down there yet?” He peered back at her.
“I tried, but I couldn’t do it.”
“What is it with you and that basement?” He set the pump on the ground. “Ever since you were little, you’ve never liked going down there. You afraid of the boogeyman getting you?” He chuckled, but she didn’t find it funny.
“No. Maybe it’s the steep narrow stairs, stone walls, dirt floor and lack of windows down there. I don’t know. I get crept out.”
“Well, let’s get to work.” Josef walked in and straight for the basement.
“What do you want me to do?” She followed as far as the top of the stairwell.
He turned on the second step and looked at her. “Come stay at my place.” He stated it plain and simple, continuing down the wooden staircase and stepped into water. He turned with a stern face. “Shit, Catherine! Why didn’t you shut the water off?” and disappeared from site.
She winced. It couldn’t be helped. She tried going into the basement but couldn’t. There was mumbling from the basement, but nothing clear could be made out because of the splashing. He probably cursed her with each step.
Operation: Date Escape by Lindsey Brookes
***************
Today we join Goddess Fish Promotions and Lindsey Brookes for a Virtual Book Tour featuring her novel, Operation: Date Escape.
***************
Cover_OperationDateEscape_2000pxSince her divorce two years before, Kelsie Collins has been determined to guard her heart and steer clear of seemingly ‘perfect’ men. An easy task considering the kind of men her matchmaking mother and her best friend, Nanci, keeps setting her up with. She allows them to set her up, knowing their hearts are in the right place and that there is no risk of her letting any man close enough to hurt her again. Her growing experience in ways to slip out of those ‘dates from hell’ prompts her to start writing a bad date survival guide. One aptly titled – OPERATION: DATE ESCAPE. And it’s during one of those escapes that sexier than sin firefighter Cole Maxwell comes to her rescue.
Cole isn’t sure what to think when the sexy redhead he’s just ‘rescued’ from a bad date informs him that he’s too ‘perfect’ to date. That’s a first. He’s had relationships end because the women couldn’t handle the risks that go along with his chosen profession, but never because he’s too perfect.
When his crew gets called out to rescue someone who is stuck in a tree, Cole finds himself once again coming to Kelsie’s rescue. This time he’s not about to let her get away without agreeing to give him a chance, even holding her high heels hostage to make it happen. She finally gives in and things heat up between them like a 3-alarm fire. But there’s more than passion between them and Cole sets out to prove to Kelsie that he’s nowhere near ‘perfect’, but he is the ‘perfect’ man for her. Can he get past the wall she’s built up around her heart? Or will he end up being just another chapter in her book of men she ran from?
*Operation: Date Escape was a Romance Writers of America Golden Heart finalist as well as a finalist in the American Title III Competition put on by Romantic Times and Dorchester Publishing.*
EXCERPT:
Shoving the key into the lock, she gave it a quick turn and then tested the door to make certain it had latched.  Then she turned to him with a smile.  “All set.  I’ll take that now.”  She reached for the bag.
He let go as her hand curled over the rolled up top of the brown paper bag.  Unfortunately, she didn’t have a good enough grip on it and it dropped to the ground with a loud thud.  The thin paper sack split open, spilling its contents everywhere.
“What the…”  His eyes rounded and his jaw went slack as he stared down at the assortment of vibrators strewn out across the shadow-dappled walkway.
Whoa!
“Oh, shit,” Kelsie exclaimed, her cheeks instantly turning a vibrant shade of red.  She fell to her knees and scrambled to gather up the assortment of sex toys scattered around her.  “They’re not mine,” she insisted as she reached for a package that read THE GLOW WORM.
He couldn’t help but grin.  “Let me guess,” he said as he knelt to help her.  “They belong to a friend?”
“Exactly,” she blurted out, looking up at him.  “They do.”
He arched a brow.
“It’s true.  I swear.  And I’m going to kill Nanci the second I see her again.”
Nanci.  Now that made more sense.  She was more the ‘Glow Worm’ kind of girl.  An odd sense of relief surged through him.  Not that he was uptight when it came to people finding sexual pleasure.  It was just hard to imagine Kelsie having that kind of sexual weapons arsenal.
He continued picking up the boxes.  “I had no idea there were so many kinds of these things.”
She laughed.  “This is nothing.”
He returned the last of the battery-operated joy-toys to what was left of the bag and then stood, carefully handing it over to Kelsie.  “Looks like Joe’s got himself a lot of competition.”
She laughed.  “Nanci doesn’t use them.  Well, I suppose she might, but that’s really not any of my business.  My guess is that these are for her collection.”
“Collection?”
She nodded.  “Yes.  You know how some men collect baseball cards?”
He nodded.
“Instead of cards, she collects vibrators.”
Kelsie was the only person he knew that could make that kind of comparison and have it sound like her friend’s obsession with fake phalluses wasn’t somewhat out of the norm.
EXCERPT:
A hush fell over the room for a moment as Stephanie appeared with Jazz trailing behind her. She was wearing a skin tight black dress with stiletto heels which was typical Stephanie fashion. She wanted nothing more than to be the center of attention like she always had been.
Without missing a beat, Stephanie walked straight over to Colin. Sally was shocked.
“Hello, Colin…” she purred as she ignored Sally completely. “You look sexy tonight, as always.” She smiled seductively as Colin looked away. “Who’s your friend?”
“None of your business, Steph. Leave me alone.”
“Oohhh…. Did I touch a nerve, sweetie?” she asked as she reached out to touch his chest.
“Don’t touch me, Stephanie. I’m warning you. Why don’t you go back to Jazz?”
“Oh. Jazz. Boring…” she sang. “We’re not together anymore, just so you know…” she whispered in a husky voice. Colin held onto Sally’s hand for dear life. She had to do something.
“Stephanie, don’t you remember me?” she asked grinning from ear to ear as she slid into Colin’s side. He put his arm around her and stared down in shock at what she was about to say.
“I don’t know you,” Stephanie said looking her up and down.
“Wow. Age is really doing a number on your brain,” Sally said.
“Who are you?” Stephanie snapped. Jazz stood a few feet back obviously trying to hear the conversation.
“I’m your worst nightmare,” Sally growled as she came almost nose to nose with Stephanie, her attorney public speaking skills getting ready to display themselves. She pulled the name tag from her purse without breaking eye contact and held it up. “You see, I’m the nerd that you and your cronies bullied through high school.”
MEDIA KIT Author PhotoAngelina Rose has wanted to write ever since she could hold a pencil. The first daughter of immigrant parents, Angelina had her head buried in books, lost in a world of heroes, heroines and exotic places.
It was a shocking experience that jump-started Angelina’s author career.
“I awoke in the ICU… I had been unconscious for several days,” Angelina says.
In 2010, Angelina had a long stint in hospital following her involvement in a motor vehicle accident: the longest time off work (as a Registered Nurse), she’d ever had in her life!
It was then she took up pen and paper and started to write again, just as she had done when she was a child. She wrote four short fiction stories for young adults, entered them in several competitions, and managed to win three first prizes!
After happily dipping her toes into writing those short fiction stories for young adults, Angelina has now authored four books in a new “Mill Creek Crossing Romance” series… contemporary romance intended for adults.
MEDIA KIT AR.Sketch.Angelina RoseThe “Starting Over Series” is another contemporary romance series she wrote about a subject she knows well…nurses and their love life. At a recent reunion of her graduating class, she could not help but notice how the same girls would group together and laugh, chat, and even shed some tears over their lives since graduating. Many of the girls had divorced… so Angelina thought “what if a group of the nurses came up with a plan to meet in two years and have a new love story to share?” Then the first story in the series was born.
There is always a story running around in her head. A man with thick dark hair, gray-blue eyes, with an engaging smile and a quick wit…or a girl crying over a broken relationship. She finds herself talking to these characters during her day: when she’s doing dishes, or bathing babies at the hospital. These characters crop up on days at the beach or on walks through the neighborhood. This is how the stories start to grow.
Angelina’s mother was an author, so Angelina grew up with a love of words and stories. If she wasn’t writing a short story about something that took her fancy, her head was buried in books…reading, reading, reading, as her brother constantly told her…
When she’s not spending time with her good-looking man, or quality time with her laptop, she’s working at the hospital, hanging out with her family and friends, or walking her two dogs around the neighborhood. Angelina spends as much time as she can traveling, then coming home and including some of those adventures in her stories.
Angelina really loves to hear from her readers and she invites you to connect with her on Facebook as she interacts daily with her readers there!
The Descent from Truth Cover
Alex Bryson is patrolling Rocky Mountain backcountry in his job as a security guard when he discovers a woman with a baby wandering alone in the snow far from the nearest road. He takes them to shelter in a weekender cabin and sees a newscast that suggests the woman, Pia Ulmer, kidnapped the baby from its rightful parents and that it is the sole heir of Peru’s wealthiest and most corrupt family. Pia claims that she is the baby’s mother, and Alex doesn’t know what to believe. After turning her in, he continues to struggle with his budding feelings for her and remains unsure of the true story. He becomes more and more involved until finally there is no turning back—lives are on the line. He helps Pia get free from a brutal world that values money over life, and together they devise a plan to reclaim the baby. Just when it looks like they might succeed, they discover an international conspiracy that changes the game entirely.
~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Alex pulled off the thermal mittens he wore over his gloves and unbuckled the backpack. “Just shifting you to the rear for a little while,” he said, trying to soothe Frederick. “When we get down to the river, we’ll travel face to face again.”

The toddler chose the moment of transfer to throw a temper tantrum. The wild kicking and squirming cost Alex his grip on the backpack.

Knowing he was going to drop it, he batted the pack so that it hit the snow uphill from him. Twisting like a wrestler trying to avoid being pinned, he grabbed it as it started to slip by on its way to the bottom of the gorge.

The move unanchored him from the ice. Belly down, feet first, he began sliding.

Gripping the shoulder strap of the backpack with one hand, he clawed at the snow with his other, trying to grasp something—anything—to arrest their slide. Twisting sideways, he angled his body to increase the likelihood of finding a handhold.

He became airborne for a moment and then landed with a jarring thud. His foot hit something solid—a root or a rock protruding from the shelf. He kicked hard and stretched his free arm, grasping for the trunk of a small evergreen. Got it!

Arresting his fall caused his body to swivel. His legs dangled over the edge of the shelf. Not enough strength left to pull himself up with one arm, but if he turned loose of the backpack it was bye-bye Freddy.

His fingers and forearm burned from holding onto the sapling. He couldn’t hang on more than a few more moments. Then both of them would splatter on rocks along the river at the bottom of the gorge. Praying that the evergreens were close enough together to keep Frederick from slipping between them, he flung the backpack up onto the shelf so that the boy, on his back, slid across the snow behind the tree line.

Using both arms, he muscled himself back up. He reached for the next shrub and then the next, pulling until he was behind the protective row.

Frederick regained his breath before Alex did. The boy’s howl announced his survival.

“That’s it, kid,” Alex shouted as he rested for an additional moment. “Let it out. Tell the world we made it.”

Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney

BBT Beside Your Heart Banner copy

~~~~~~~~~~
MEDIA KIT book cover
“It’s an emotional story that will take the reader back to those feelings that made the late teen years such a powerful time.”
Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.
Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?
~~~~~~~~~~

BBT Beside Your Heart Book Cover Banner copy

“No British literature. Isn’t this supposed to be an English class?” Adam asked.

“Uh.” My ancestors would’ve been proud of the jolt of American patriotism that hit me.  “There was a revolution two hundred years ago. We write our own books now.”

He leaned back in his seat with a smile. “I think I heard about that.”

“We still share the same language.”

“Sometimes I’m not too sure.”

“I bet not.” I could imagine what he thought of a Texas accent.

He picked up the list of books again. “What about Catcher in the Rye?”

“I read it a long time ago when I was, like, eleven.” I laughed a little as I remembered how I’d first come to read it.

“Is there something funny about that?”

“Yeah. My father had suggested I read it then. The book is the classic coming-of-age story. Clearly, he wasn’t really thinking about whether or not it was appropriate for an eleven-year-old.”

“Really? Why?”

“Well, for one thing, the main character is a guy who swears a lot.”

“I suppose I swear a lot.” He cracked a sly smile. “At least compared to you Yankees.”

“Yankees? You’re in the South.” I laughed.

“What else is inappropriate about the book? Now I’m interested. It can’t only be a few swear words.

“No, it’s not just that. It’s…” I hesitated for a moment as I realized I was about to bring up the topic of sex with Adam Kincaid. What the hell, I thought. I should be matter-of-fact about it. He had a girlfriend and would never want anything with me. I could hide I thought he was hot, so I shrugged. “Holden, the main character…he’s a little sexually frustrated.

His eyes twinkled, and it felt as if my words hung in the air. I wanted to squirm in my seat. ‘Sexually frustrated’—like me checking out Adam Kincaid.

His proper upbringing showed again as he sidestepped the issue, yet he smirked. “That sounds like an adventurous book to be on an American high school syllabus.”

“Like I said—it’s considered an American classic.” I laughed. “I guess some things are sacred.”

“But of course.” The gleam appeared in his eye again, and he turned toward me in his seat. “Teenage sexual frustration is sort of a rite of passage, if you will.”

There went the good-English-boy manners out the window. His tone, the look in his eye, his body language—was he flirting with or taunting me? I decided the former was impossible, and if the latter, I wasn’t going to back down. With two parents who were lawyers, debate was a family routine.

“A rite of passage? More like a biological fact, isn’t it?” I asked, casually clicking my pen. I raised a brow. “Especially for guys.”

“You’re right about that,” he said with a grin.

The Best Man’s Baby by Victoria James

Author PicIt is my pleasure to interview Victoria James, author of The Best Man’s Baby. Welcome to Room With Books, Victoria!

First let me give you a little background on Victoria.

Victoria James always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples) and a cardboard cover and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.

 In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill the dream of writing romantic fiction.

 Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Victoria loves connecting with readers, you can find her online at:
Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter / Website
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1.  Tell me a little about The Best Man’s Baby and what inspired you to write it?

The Best Man’s Baby is book two in my Red River Series.  It’s about two opposite people facing the repercussions of what was supposed to only be a one night stand. Claire is the ultimate good-girl, and Jake…well, he’s the town bad-boy. Their journey to HEA is filled with self-discovery, passion, laughter and heartache. They are both really strong-willed characters, neither of them willing to back down and surrender their beliefs. But they’re also both holding onto some painful memories, and Jake has a secret past that he must finally confront before moving on with Claire.

I’m not really sure what exactly inspired me to write it, other than the characters themselves. They played a large role in the first book of the Red River Series before I even knew what their story would be. Jake and Claire were really dynamic in that book…and before I knew it, the plot for The Best Man’s Baby was ready to go.

2.  When you start writing do you have the story outlined or do your characters dictate what will happen?

Because I sell on proposal, I do have most of the story mapped out. I tend to stray from the outline as the story progresses. Sometimes the characters have a mind of their own and I just go with the flow!

3.  Have you ever had arguments with your characters and who usually wins?

They always win!

4.  What is one thing about you your readers would be surprised to know?

I’m a total wimp when it comes to scary movies…can’t watch them!

5.  If you could write with any other author who would it be any why?

Judith McNaught. I adore all of her historical romances and became hooked on the genre after I read her books. I’d love to write a historical romance book with her expertise!

6.  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a writer!

7.  When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start?

I started writing when my son was born (six years ago).  But my writing was very sporadic because I had a new baby, and a full time business, and no maternity leave.  We also moved quite a bit in the last eight years.  But I would write when I could, not losing sight of the goal of publication.  When my daughter was born (2 years ago) I started querying agents and my current agent rejected the manuscript that I’d submitted but told me to send something else along.  Fast forward to a year later and another house move and I did just that-and she offered me representation.  I then sold to Entangled, Indulgence a few months later.

8.  What music inspires your writing?

I make a playlist for each book. Sometimes even before I start the book, I’ll add some songs that I think would be perfect for the mood of that book.

Fun Facts:

What is your favorite breakfast? I’m not a huge breakfast fan…but coffee is a must!

What is your favorite color? Blue

What is your favorite movie? So hard to pick just one…The Pursuit of Happiness is one of my favorites.

What is your dream car (details please)? A Range Rover! Many of the heroes in my books drive one. I’m happy to live vicariously through them 😉

How can my  readers find you? Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter / Website     Amazon / B&N

Thank you for the interview, Victoria, and I wish your all the best with The Best Man’s Baby. Patricia, Room With Books

Cover_The Best Man's BabyFlorist Claire Holbrook has always played by the rules her entire life, but breaks them to spend one night with sexy lone wolf Jake Manning, a man she’s adored since she was a teenager. Six weeks later things get complicated when she discovers they created a bond that will last a lifetime…

Jake has never played by the rules. Getting Minister Holbrook’s daughter pregnant wasn’t part of any life plan, but he won’t run from his responsibilities. He’ll step up and be the best man he can, even if he doesn’t have a clue where to begin. The more time he spends with Claire, though, the more he wants her, and the harder it is to get close because that would mean sharing the one thing he hasn’t with anyone–the truth and his heart.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
He stood behind her and whispered in her ear. “I’m not leaving.”
She sighed and turned around to look at him. They were standing a few inches apart, and for what had to be the hundredth time in two days he wondered how he’d never noticed her eyes.
Big and bright, but with a soul that hinted at such emotion and fire, it filled him with the need to see how deep it went.
“What are you doing here?”
“Helping.”
“You have never been back here in all the years I’ve been in business.”
“Things are different now. We’re having a baby.”
“Shhhh!” He bit back another grin as she turned her head around wildly to make sure no one had heard.
“Listen, you’re not getting rid of me. I’m here to help. Then when you’re finished, I’m going to take you out for dinner.”
He saw her cheeks flush, then she shook her head. “I have a long day ahead of me. No time for any distractions.”
“Perfect, so afterward you’ll need some time to relax. I’ll take you out to your favorite restaurant.”
“You don’t even know what that is.”
“Then you can tell me.” It was simple, really. He didn’t understand why that would upset her.
“You should know what it is. In the Claire Holbrook world, the father of my child should know my favorite restaurant,” she whispered.
“Just tell me and we’ll go,” he said with a shrug.
She shook her head, her ponytail swinging back and forth with the motion. He wondered what she’d do if he pulled her hair free, letting his hands run through it as it tumbled around her shoulders. He stared at her mutinous expression. She’d probably try to deck him.
Along Came Pauly by Chris Redding
A contemporary romance about a dog that brings two people together who don’t want to be. She’s a vegetarian veterinarian who needs cash for a no-kill shelter. He’s the heir to a hot dog fortune who must give away money before he gains his inheritance. Sounds like a perfect match. It isn’t.
Along Came Pauly Front Cover
There isn’t enough L’Oreal on the planet to cover my white trash roots, Daria Jacks thought this as her black pump went tripping down the long, elegant staircase. Without her. The shoe clicked and clacked against the marble steps.
Her date, Samuel Lafayette, stiffened next to her.
The old adage about being able to dress her up but not take her anywhere came to Daria’s mind. Outclassed once again, her gaze swept over a ballroom filled with people who’d been born into money.
She’d been the kid with skinned knees for every major event in her life, except her birth. Each school picture sported a bandage on some part of her face.
At least there were no reporters at this event. No one to record her gaffe for posterity. More importantly, no one to ask her about her new-found father.
Opting for a more demure stance, she didn’t chase after the footwear. Instead, she held her head high and her arms relaxed at her side as if nothing happened. As if no one could clearly see she wore just one shoe.
The errant shoe would’ve gone farther afield if a hunky man in a tuxedo hadn’t caught it. The catcher had the blackest hair she’d ever seen. And the bearing of a Jersey Italian guy, sure of himself but probably had a heart of gold. That type always did.
A lopsided grin broke out on his face as he glanced up at her. He cocked his head, motioning to the shoe. She nodded and shrugged.
Her heart skipped a beat before she remembered her dilemma. His attendance at this ball meant he was rich. She’d sworn off rich, hunky men.
The Reluctant Bride
by Beverley Eikli
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cover_TheReluctantBrideWinner of the Choc-Lit Australian Star competition!

Emily Micklen is proud, passionate – and left with no option after the death of her loving fiancé, Jack, but to marry the scarred, taciturn, soldier who needs to secure a well-connected wife.

Major Angus McCartney hopes that marriage to the unobtainable beauty whose confident gaze about the ballroom once failed to register his presence will offer both of them a chance to put the past to rest.

Emily’s determination to be faithful to Jack’s memory is matched only by Angus’s desire to win her with honour and action. Sent to France on a mission of national security, Angus discovers how deeply Emily has been duped, but the secrets he uncovers lead them both into danger. Can Angus and Emily unmask the real conspirators before they lose everything?

Excerpt:

Angus and Emily, newly married, have just been visited unexpectedly by Angus’s brother and his unsuitable consort. Emily, embarrassed by her highly pregnant state and knowing it will cause gossip amongst Angus’s family, reacts in this scene to her husband’s apologies for the situation Emily has just confronted.

With deliberate care Emily set down the plates once more and turned to look at her husband through narrowed eyes.

‘For contaminating me with a lady of dubious repute? But Angus, how much worse a contaminant would I have been had you not married me?’ She patted her swollen belly. ‘You’d be apologizing to your brother. A fallen woman—’

‘Don’t speak like that.’ His wide-set eyes burned with undeserved defense of her. ‘Men’s impulses can be ungovernable, but ladies do not suffer such … urges … You were … taken advantage of.’

Emily stared at him. She sucked in a long, quavering breath as her simmering anger came finally to the boil. Is that what he believed? That she was insensible to passion? And that was a good thing?

‘What would you say if I told you that my impulses were every bit as ungovernable as Jack’s?’ She could barely control her anger sufficiently to speak. For days she had forced her feelings into the background, using the same emotional device against her unwanted husband as she had when her father insulted her, shutting out the hurt by erecting a barrier as impenetrable as steel.

Now, feeling surged through her, blackening her vision and causing her to sway. She put her hand on the back of the sofa to steady herself.

Angus stood awkwardly by the door, as if unsure whether to move closer to support her, or beat a tactful retreat.

Emily glared at him. ‘What if I told you that I was so consumed by passion in Jack’s arms I would not have heeded the Blessed Virgin Mary cautioning me against the temptations of the flesh?’ She tried to regulate her breathing, but the rage was clawing its way further up her body, threatening to make her its puppet. She, who never lost her temper. ‘I loved Jack. I was his slave in passion, every bit as culpable as he. If you are so concerned for virtue, spare your condemnation of innocent Miss Galway. You need only cast your eyes upon your wife to be singed by my sin. There! I have confessed my true nature. Whatever you thought of me before, you cannot but think worse of me now.’ She registered the horror in his eyes and was glad for it. Much better that she banish any pretense between them.

She’d never expressed anger as poisonous as this. At first it frightened her, then it sent exhilaration pulsing through her. Her love for Jack had been cut off at the root. Now hatred filled her veins, making her feel alive again. ‘And so you know, I care nothing for your opinion,’ she added.

She managed to remain upright, though her vision came in waves. She could feel her strength leaving her, but she had to spit out the truth so he’d have no illusions as to the kind of woman he’d married. A woman no good man deserved.

‘You married me because you needed a wife. I married you so I could keep my child. We made a contract. My body is yours to do with as you please, but that is all you will ever have. My thoughts, my feelings, my love will be forever out of bounds to you.’

Beverley Eikli and her Rhodesian Ridgeback, HomerBeverley Eikli is the author of eight historical romances published by Pan Macmillan Momentum, Robert Hale, Ellora’s Cave and Total-e-Bound. Recently she won UK Women’s Fiction publisher Choc-Lit’s Search for an Australian Star competition with her suspenseful, spy-based Regency Romance The Reluctant Bride.

She’s been shortlisted twice for a Romance Readers of Australia Award in the Favourite Historical category — in 2011 for  A Little Deception, and in 2012 for her racy Regency Romp, Rake’s Honour, written under her Beverley Oakley pseudonym.

Beverley wrote her first romance when she was seventeen. However, drowning the heroine on the last page was, she discovered, not in the spirit of the genre so her romance-writing career ground to a halt and she became a journalist.

After throwing in her job on South Australia’s metropolitan daily The Advertiser to manage a luxury safari lodge in the Okavango Delta, in Botswana, Beverley discovered a new world of romance and adventure in a thatched cottage in the middle of a mopane forest with the handsome Norwegian bush pilot she met around a camp fire.

Eighteen years later, after exploring the world in the back of Cessna 404s and CASA 212s as an airborne geophysical survey operator during low-level sorties over the French Guyanese jungle and Greenland’s ice cap, Beverley is back in Australia teaching in the Department of Professional Writing & Editing at Victoria University, as well as teaching Short Courses for the Centre of Adult Education and Macedon Ranges Further Education.

Shadow of Perception by Kristine Mason

VBT Shadow of Perception Book Cover Banner

Cover_Shadow of Perception

What happens when negligent plastic surgeons receive a taste of their own medicine…?

Chicago investigative reporter, Eden Risk, receives an unmarked envelope containing a postcard ordering her to watch the enclosed DVD…or someone else dies. No Police. After Eden watches the DVD, a gruesome, horrifying surgery, she turns to the private criminal investigation agency, CORE, for help. Only she hadn’t expected that help to come with a catch. Her former lover, Hudson Patterson, has been assigned to the case.

Hudson would rather have another CORE agent handle the investigation. Two years ago, he’d screwed things up with Eden…bad. And as more DVDs arrive, Eden and Hudson find themselves not only knee-deep in a twisted investigation, but forced to deal with their past, and the love they’d tried to deny.

VBT Shadow of Perception Banner

Hudson cleared his throat and eyed Eden’s cat. “I’ve only seen cats that size at the zoo or in the jungle. What the hell is it? Besides big and ugly.”

“Don’t talk like that.” She cupped Fabio’s only ear. “He’s sensitive.”

Eden had to have snapped at some point during the past two years. Literally. Since when did this woman, this no bullshit, headstrong woman, become all sensitive?

“Whatever, Dr. Doolittle,” he said, hiding his irritation. She could let her guard down, shed her hard as nails persona for a frickin’ cat, but she’d never bothered to make the effort with him.  During those months they’d been together, she’d come willingly to his bed, or she’d invite him to hers. Their pillow talk had been fun and sexy. They had exchanged stories, but never secrets. And after a while, that had bothered him. For the first time…ever, he’d been intrigued by a woman and he’d begun to trust enough to want to give more of himself than he’d ever been willing to in the past. Unfortunately, despite the intimate moments they’d shared, she had kept herself guarded. Instead of trying to find a way to break through her barriers, he’d gone and screwed everything up with her. He’d regretted that night for over two years. And the mistake she’d promised him she would never forgive.

AuthorPic

I didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.

When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.
