Excerpt:

Awake.

Danny Shanklin woke hyperventilating, his heart trying to punch through his ribs. Opening his eyes, he recoiled. Bright light. Burning red. He twisted.

Got to get away.

Pain.

His right forefinger. It was caught in something. Left hand too. He tried to see what. Saw more burning red. Forced himself to keep looking. The red fractured into a blizzard of pink dots. The pink dots faded into blue.

A rectangle of blue. Right there. Dead ahead.

‘What the…?’ Danny’s mouth was dry as ash.

He felt something solid behind his back. A chair? Was he sitting? His neck throbbed like he’d been stung. He couldn’t slow his breathing. His heart kept hammering.

Where am I? What’s going on?

A scream in the distance. Muffled shouts.

The blue was the sky, Danny realised. The rectangle was a set of open French doors leading out onto a balcony. The buildings across the street lurched into view. Rows of windows glinted in the sunlight. A hot breeze blew in his face.

Danny tried to stand. Faltered. Whatever his hands were caught up in slid sideways with a thud. He felt cold metal in his right hand. His left was entwined in what felt like a strap.

Even before Danny looked down and the object swung fully into focus, he’d already guessed what it was.

A rifle. Its barrel was now aimed down at the floor beside him. His right forefinger was wedged through the weapon’s trigger guard. His left hand was bound up in its shoulder strap.

A Heckler & Koch G36 assault rifle.

But why am I holding it?

Heartbeat still racing. Muscles flexing. Buzzing now. Feeling crazed. Like he’d just been in a fight.

A voice inside him yelled, Move.

Tightening his grip on the rifle, Danny rose and spun. The short corridor behind him was empty. The door at the end was closed.

He kicked away the chair he’d been sitting on. He dropped to one knee and scanned the room. A glass table. A sofa. Expensive furniture all around. An open door led into what looked like a bedroom. No-one in sight.

He glimpsed a flash of white on the ground. His own feet. He was wearing  a pristine pair of Nikes he’d never seen before.

He couldn’t remember anything. Was he hallucinating? Was that what this was? Some kind of a crazy dream?

The sounds of shouts and car horns drifted in on the breeze. A siren wailed. Another scream.

Danny’s eyes locked on the sofa. Someone had been sitting there. He half-glimpsed a memory. A mocking smile on a thickset, hook-nosed blonde man’s face.

Splinters of information pierced Danny’s mind. This was the Ritz Hotel, he remembered. Room 112. Third floor.

But what am I doing here?

More screaming.

Outside.

Love in the Time of the Dead by Tera Shanley

LTD_cover

Title:  Love in the Time of the Dead

Author:  Tera Shanley

Genre:  Adult supernatural/zombie romance

Publication Date:  October 22, 2013, by Omnific Publishing

Event Organized by:  Literati Author Services, Inc.

Synopsis

Laney Landry has been fighting Deads alongside her brother and friends for three years. But she has a secret. She’s immune to Dead bites and has to find the right people to trust with the information. Her team rallies around her to find a doctor who can extract a vaccine from Laney which could fight the virus that ended the world.

Sean Daniels leads a colony that provides her team with much needed shelter and supplies. He is obviously interested in Laney. The question is whether he’s only intrigued by her as a source for the possible vaccine, or for something more. Tests for the cure might push her body beyond what it can endure, and just as she faces a ghost from her past, her longtime teammate Derek Mitchell hints at an interest in more than just her Dead slaying abilities.

Two honorable and alluring men – one colossal decision to make. Despite historically bad taste in men, can she rise above the chaos of the apocalypse and choose the one who deserves her heart? The right choice could mean the difference between surviving…and living.

Author Picture ~ Tera ShanleyAbout the Author

Born and raised in small town Texas, Tera Shanley grew up in books. Her cousin gifted her a signed copy of Beauty by Bill Wallace when she was young and that was it for her. So smitten was she with getting lost in a story, that while other eleven year olds her age were groaning at the accelerated reader program in school, she was racking up the points just for fun.

Balancing chronic book-wormyness is her devotion to the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, camping – her soul is happiest out of doors. And lucky for Tera, her family feels the same. She grew up a wild child helping her grandma ranch cattle, and has a hundred memories out in the wilderness which tend to influence her books.

When she’s not eating chocolate, slinging rifles, or soaking up some sun, she’s lost in a book, but these days it’s more often one she’s writing. From historic western romance, to paranormal romance, to apocalyptic (zombie) romance, the genre doesn’t matter quite as much to her as the love story.

She currently lives with her husband and two young children, and is owned by two crazy mini-cujos.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000039_00012]“Quinn?”

“Huh?”

I blinked back into focus and found Travis in the doorway. My heart lifted at the sight of him. “Travis?”

“You’ve been staring at the wall for over a minute.” He frowned. “What happened to your face?”

“I fell,” I told the desk after averting my eyes.

Travis came and stood in my space. He crouched down and cupped my face, examining the injury. “When?”

“Is that important?” I could feel his breath on my face, and I wanted him so much. Sheer agony speared through me, and I closed my eyes against the force. His touch on my forehead was gentle, and I jerked my head back. “It’s just a graze. What are you doing here?”

Travis sighed, and it was weighted with so many unsaid words that I knew he didn’t know where to start. “You know why I’m here.”

Of course I knew.

“Don’t stand so close,” I said firmly but he must have heard something else coming out of my mouth because he didn’t move.

“Quinn,” he breathed, and the depth of emotion in that single word tugged at my heart. “I can’t let you do this.”

Travis held my eyes, but I couldn’t reply because suddenly his lips were on mine. My mouth opened underneath the onslaught, moaning at the taste of him. He lifted me off the chair, and I hung on as he spun me around and pushed me up against the desk.

“Stop,” I choked out when his mouth left mine to nibble on my ear.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.” I moaned as his teeth bit into my skin. “No.”

God help me, but I couldn’t push him away. I wasn’t strong enough and he was relentless. His hands were all over me, pushing under clothes and grabbing at bare skin. I slid my own underneath his shirt, tugging on the waistband of his jeans to drag him closer. His mouth returned to mine and my hand came around his neck, holding him there so he wouldn’t take it away.

“Oh that shit is not cool. So not cool.” Mac’s voice registered through the fog, and I pulled back, rubbing my lips together.

Travis took a step back, his hair mussed, and cleared his throat. “We were just ah…sorting the security detail for the Melbourne trip.”

I sat up, straightening my shirt, my entire body heating with embarrassment when I saw Jared smirking at both of us from over Mac’s shoulder.

“That’s Jared’s department, yet here you are, all over it like a rash. I’m not fooled. I can bet by the way you had Quinn spread out all over that desk she isn’t fooled either.”

Jared folded his arms and raised a brow. “Nice one, Trav.”

Mac spun around with wide eyes and pointed in his face. “One word, Jared. Bedroom. Not the pantry, not the couch, not the shower. Bedroom.”

He held up his hands. “No idea what you’re talking about,” he muttered and disappeared.

“Hurry up and finish your fumigating because I’m tired of you and your shitty food in my house!” she yelled after him.

“It’s Sunday,” she growled and slammed the coffee in her hand on the desk as she sat down, “but you’re here so let’s get this shit done, and then you both can get down to other business.” She pursed her lips but I could see the curve in them as though satisfied that whatever happened last night was now over.

I swallowed and looked at Travis. Soon it would be.
