BOOK SUMMARY:

The man who saved her is also the man who destroyed her…or is he?

Seven years ago, I decided I wanted to be a fighter. Marcus Roma showed me how.

Six years ago, my parents died in a car accident. Marcus Roma picked me up off the ground and held me until I could stand on my own two feet.

Five years ago, I fell in love with him.

And then Marcus Roma disappeared. No warning. No explanation. Just gone.

Yesterday, he came back.

And now I have to decide who’s telling the truth, and who’s lying. Who wants something from me, and who wants…Me.

If I guess wrong, I could lose everything. I need to think clearly. But Marcus makes that impossible. Marcus makes me weak. Marcus makes me want, in a way I’ve never felt before.

Marcus Roma will make me fall. The only question is—will he be there to catch me this time?

LIE TO ME is a new adult / adult contemporary romance novel about truth, lies, and redemption. It is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

TEASER/EXCERPT:

I stand there, swaying, digging for my Metrocard as the bus finally begins to pull away from the curb. The light ahead on Delancey Street is green, and beyond that is the long expanse of the Williamsburg Bridge. My heart is thudding against my ribcage, each beat threatening to crack the thin veneer of stability I have erected around me and let it all out: all the tears, the heartbreak, the grief. The loneliness. The lust. I just manage to swipe my Metrocard, catching myself on the handrail as the bus lurches ahead, when I hear it.

Marcus pounding on the bus door.

I don’t know why, but I turn to watch him. Everybody else thinks he’s just a guy who missed the bus in the rain, who knows he can’t catch a cab when the weather’s like this, who’s pissed he’s going to have to wait to get across the bridge.

But I know he’s chasing me.

That Marcus Roma, for once, is the one chasing me.

Now, from inside this bus, from the other side of what might as well be an impenetrable barrier, I can look at him. I can look at him run after me, a look of desperation on his face that I’ve only ever seen once or twice, and only when he didn’t know how to help me. Marcus Roma raw is too much for me to handle right now. Maybe ever again. No one else has ever seen through me like Marcus, no one else has ever stripped me of all pretense. It was always intoxicating. It was always a rush.

It always made me so very, very vulnerable. Once it made me strong, too. Now?

Now it would just make it all that easier to fall.

But would it? And here is where I really start to drive myself crazy, in the seconds when I’m watching Marcus run in the rain, falling farther behind the bus with every step. Because now that I’m not standing in front of him, exposed to those eyes, I’m thinking, Maybe this is actually what I need.

Maybe I need to yell at him. Maybe an explanation would end it. Maybe it would exorcise the ghost of Marcus Roma from my life once and for all and I could move on.

Or maybe this is just my body making rationalizations for what it wants. Which is Marcus.

Five years, and I’ve never forgotten the feel of his hands on my body.

My throat tightens up and my mouth goes dry. We’re on the bridge. Marcus is far behind us. The rain slams into the big, broad windshield of the bus as we speed toward Brooklyn, and I’m thinking about how I just ran. I never used to run. That’s not what I do. I’m a fighter.

Marcus taught me that.

I fought my way through after my parents died in the accident, with Marcus’s help. I fought for Dill. I fought for my own freedom. And I just ran from Marcus, because I wasn’t sure I could fight…

What?

I’m kidding myself. I know what. I know what I had begun to feel for him before he left, what I never stopped feeling, even after he was gone: no man has ever made me feel like that. Like he could turn me molten with just a look. Like I could drown in him, like I wanted to drown in him. Like I loved him so much that everything else faded away, like I could live on that feeling alone, burning bright and beautiful in the dark of my wounded heart.

I’ve thought about what it felt like to have Marcus Roma touch me so many times. What it was like to have him inside me. Even after he abandoned me without any explanation, even after he broke me, even after he did all that knowing exactly what it would do to me, he’s still the only man I’ve ever dreamed of. I’ve had other men since then, and every time I’ve been painfully aware of how much they were not Marcus.

Fuck him for that. Seriously.

I’m angry and overwhelmed and I’m feeling way too many things in a short period of time, like all the joy, rage, loss, grief, and lust of those years is condensed into this one moment on a public bus, speeding across the Williamsburg Bridge, and this is the one time I can’t shut down my brain. I can’t stop myself from asking what if? What if I don’t see him again? What if he just doesn’t care to try again? What if this is it?

What if this is the last time I see him, and I’ve run away?

Great. I get to add shame to the mix of emo crap I’ve got brewing inside me. I feel like I’m going to be sick. Apparently it’s noticeable, because a guy sitting up front actually gets up and offers me his seat. You have to be very pregnant or very old or, apparently, very much on the verge of totally losing your shit in public to get that offer.

I say thanks, but no thanks. I grip the handrail harder. I need to feel myself grounded to the physical earth, not resting on a seat, mind free to wander and think about all the what-ifs. About how, if I’m truly honest, for that one second when I locked eyes with him, I felt like I did back in the old days. Like I wasn’t alone in the world. Like I had a teammate. Just because he could see me and I could see him.

And if there’s one thing I still need, almost more than I need my next breath, it’s to feel like I’m not alone in the world.

Except that I am. And I have been, since Marcus left. Maybe when Dill is older I won’t feel like that. But right now I’m all Dill has, and I have to stay strong and sane. Which means no chasing after the man who made me this way, or letting him chase after me, or indulging in any of that hopeful bullshit that is sure to get my heart broken all over again.

So it’s done. He’s gone. Probably he won’t try to contact me or anything, since he hasn’t tried to already. It was just a chance encounter, and now it’s over. That is a very good thing.

So why am I hyperventilating? Why is my palm sliding down the handrail, slick with sweat?

Why do I feel nauseous when I think, it’s over.

It’s been over. Christ, Harlow, get a grip!

People are still looking at me. I’m soaking wet, my blonde hair plastered to my head, my leather jacket beaded with rain. I can feel that my lips are blue. The bus is slowing down, running into traffic on the other end of the bridge, and I think this is good. This will give me some time to get myself together, to get my head right before I have to go home and see Mr. Wolfe.

And then it hits me. Mr. Wolfe. Marcus.

Both back in town at the same time.

That can’t be a coincidence.

I think that, and relief blossoms in me. Because Marcus isn’t here for me. It’s not about me; it never was. He’s here because Mr. Wolfe is here. Marcus is still working for him. So even if I’d decided that getting some kind of closure, or an explanation, or whatever was a good idea, it’s not like I’d get it. Because Marcus isn’t here for me. I just dodged a major, major bullet.

This is what I tell myself while the bus lurches toward the other end of the bridge. This was a lucky escape; bullet dodged. I can’t ever be in a position where I want more from Marcus than he wants from me. I can’t let him back in my life.

And it’s not a problem, because he’s not here for me.

I tell myself this over and over and over again.

By the time the bus slows to a stop in Williamsburg, I’ve calmed down slightly. Figuring out that Marcus still doesn’t give a crap is somehow liberating, I guess because it’s a familiar kind of pain. Like, that I know how to deal with, if only because I’ve had a lot of practice. It was just the shock of seeing him that put me off balance. I’m over it now.

I’m totally over it.

I climb down the stairs, out of the bus, almost expecting to see, like, sunshine and bluebirds and whatever else—that’s how liberating that thought feels. Marcus is across the river, on a different island entirely, and out of my life, and if I can just avoid him from here on out, I will only have the real estate developers and Mr. Wolfe to deal with.

So, no worse than things were when I got up this morning.

I’m expecting the clouds to part and the sun to shine, but obviously it’s still raining. That’s ok, too. I let it wash over me, imagining the relief I’ve convinced myself I’m supposed to feel, trying to let it flow through me all over again before I walk home in the rain, umbrella-less.

I close my eyes, turn my face up to the sky.

When I open them again, I see Marcus.

Standing tall, breathing hard, his black hair wet with rain. Hat gone. Coat open, white dress shirt soaked through, his pecs and abs contracting with every strained breath. Pale gray green eyes on fire.

“Harlow,” he chokes out.

He’s still holding my umbrella.

He ran. He chased me across the bridge. He beat a bus, across the bridge.

To catch me.

He’s panting still, out of breath, and now it’s like he’s stolen mine, too. He takes another step toward me and this time I can’t look away. His eyes have me. It’s the same, the same as it always was, only different, now, too: more. There’s all those years, all those shared memories flying between us, swirling around in an invisible field that I know we both feel, all those things that we know about each other that no one else will ever really, truly know, no matter how much we might want to tell them, because they weren’t there. It was just us. Just Marcus and me.

And those eyes, seeing through me.

And now there’s what’s different about it, too. What’s changed. How I can’t ignore the man he’s become. Jesus God, no one could ignore that. Can he see through that, too? Can he see me watch his body move, watch how he brushes that black hair out of his eyes, how the rain is caught on those long eyelashes? How when he licks his lips, moving toward me, I’m transfixed?

The thing between us is alive, I swear to God. All that history, all those memories, and now this, this unique awareness of the physical man in front of me, and the way my traitorous body responds: it’s a living thing, whipping between us, drawing us closer, something blind and stupid, fierce and feral. It’s choking me, making it hard to see straight, to remember all the reasons I have to be afraid for my heart. All I can see is that strong jaw, those huge shoulders, that tie dancing in the wind, water dripping down his face while he looks at me with those beautiful, sad eyes…

No single human being has ever hurt me the way Marcus Roma has, and now he’s back. And I don’t want him to leave. And that will be my downfall.

If I let it.

“What are you doing?” I whisper. It’s all I can think to say. I don’t understand any of this. Why is here? What does he want from me?

“You ran,” he says. Like that’s an explanation.

“I can’t,” I say. I don’t know what to call what’s happening, or what might happen, but with every step he takes toward me, I know.

“I can’t,” I say again.

Marcus’s face screws up like he’s in actual pain. “Please, Harlow,” he says. “Just talk to me.”

He puts his hand out. Such a simple thing, and yet it means everything. I stare at it for I don’t know how long, not trusting myself to look him in the eyes again. The worst part of this is that I want to take it so badly. I want…whatever I can get.

And that is pathetic.

If it weren’t for Dill, I’d throw myself at his mercy all over again. My heart is pounding, my blood rushing in my ears, my body and soul screaming for some kind of release from the last five years of torture. From five years of not knowing why. From five years of thinking he just didn’t care enough, of thinking that I was just that easy to throw away.

And I’d do it all over again, if it weren’t for my responsibilities.

“I don’t talk to ghosts,” I say, and walk away.

I walk away, but I don’t escape. Not even a little bit. I feel his eyes on me the whole time. I feel him, with me. And all the way home, the only thing I can think is: What does Marcus Roma want from me?

After all this time, what does he want?

Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen

KnightBlindness HighRes
Ready for battle, Medieval English knight, Stephen Palmer, charges into the French enemy’s cavalry line. Heeding a warning given months before, he hesitates as he comes face-to-face with the knight in the warning. Struck down in the year 1356, he finds himself landing in the year 2013. Grievously wounded, he’s taken to a nearby hospital. Confused by the new world surrounding him, he attempts to convince the staff he’s from another time, only to find they think him mad.

Rescued by friends, who, to his surprise, have also come through time, he must find a way to function in this odd modern England. He is quickly enchanted by the kind Esme Crippen, the young woman hired to tutor him. She too is enchanted by him. Tempted to deepen the relationship, she hesitates thinking him adorable, but mad. He must discover the means for getting her to believe the truth, all the while, unknown to him, he didn’t come forward in time alone. The enemy knight has also traveled to 2013.

French noble, Roger Marchand, doesn’t question why the English knight who charged him hesitated. That fraction of a pause gave him the advantage needed and he brought his sword down upon the Englishman’s helmet hard, unhorsing the knight. He moved to finish the Englishman off when the world changed in a rush of sensations as he is ripped through time.

Seeking a reason for the terrible event, he enters a nearby chapel. There, thinking God has chosen him for a quest to turn French defeat that day in 1356 to victory, he sets out to find the English knight. The man he is convinced holds the key to time. If he returns to the day of the battle, he can warn his king of mistakes that snatched victory from them.

~~~~~~~~~~
Knight Blindness is the first book I’ve read by Chris Karlsen. Although part of the Knights in Time series, it was very easy to read as a stand alone novel. The cast of characters is strong and the writing very clear and concise. It was well researched and the 14th century attributes seem quite authentic.
Two battling knights are thrust into the 21st century just as Marchand strikes the blow that blinds Stephen. Stephen has the added challenge of learning to navigate a completely foreign world and all the changed technology while completely blind. Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen reminds me of a fairy tale in reverse and the heroine rescues her shining knight in distress.
While I was disappointed with the abrupt ending, it sets up perfectly a fourth novel featuring Marchand and his lady fair. I recommend Knight Blindness to all interested in time travel romance and look forward to reading the previous two books and perhaps many more!
SONY DSCI was born and raised in Chicago. My father was a history professor and my mother was, and is, a voracious reader. I grew up with a love of history and books.
My parents also love traveling, a passion they passed onto me. I wanted to see the places I read about, see the land and monuments from the time periods that fascinated me. I’ve had the good fortune to travel extensively throughout Europe, the Near East, and North Africa.
I am a retired police detective. I spent twenty-five years in law enforcement with two different agencies. My desire to write came in my early teens. After I retired, I decided to pursue that dream. I write two different series. My paranormal romance series is called, Knights in Time. My romantic thriller series is, Dangerous Waters.
I currently live in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, four rescue dogs and a rescue horse.
Synopsis
In Love by Design
The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod
(Volume III)
By Tracy Ellen
Cover Art by Samantha Prudhon Falkowski
In Love by Design welcomes you back to Northfield, Minnesota and the life of Anabel Axelrod.
Its official–the sexy, blonde bookstore owner with a sassy attitude, a brain that never stops, and a reluctant penchant for helping her family and friends out of trouble has fallen madly in love.
Anabel doesn’t get to prove what a fabulous girlfriend she’ll make for more than eight hours before Luke disappears out of town. Instead of getting to enjoy being a girl passionately in love, Anabel’s shiny new feelings and trust in her boyfriend are immediately being tested.
Who is the darkly powerful and charismatic Luke Drake? What are his secrets? Does he really love Anabel, or has he been manipulating her to further an intricate plan of cold revenge in the making for over twenty years?
This third book in the series finds the confident Anabel desperately needing her sense of humor and all her understanding of human nature to deal with life. But Anabel soon learns the hard way she has even bigger issues to worry about than family problems and an incredibly hot, but very tricky boyfriend.
She’s made some bad enemies recently and someone wants her dead. After the first attempt on her life, Anabel and Luke team up to solve this mystery, but Anabel is beginning to wonder if she can trust her Dark Prince. Or Is this one fairy tale where love does not conquer all?
Meet the Author
Meet Tracy Ellen…
For all of my life, I’ve always had a thing for shoes that make me say “Oh, yum!” and for reading romance novels written about hot, dangerously smart men and sassy, intelligent women. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve avidly read everything I could get my greedy little hands on to find these jewels.
One day this past year or so, I realized that I spend more money on books now than I do on shoes–and I was stunned. Should I be ashamed of this fact or proud? Then an even stranger thing happened. It was like a switch turned off/on inside me. All of a sudden instead of wanting to read about diabolically sexy men, I wanted to write my own story of the building hot romance between a lippy, confident woman and a gorgeously mysterious man.
So began my budding writing career. Then I made another happy discovery—I absolutely love writing and still have a thing for shoes! Since then, my self-published books include A Date with Fate and Courted by Karma in The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod series. The third book in the series, In Love by Design will be released in September 2013.
For those of you who may want to know some pertinent facts: I was born in Indiana to middle-class parents, the third out of five hellions. My mother wanted to go to work every day. I’ve always lived in the Midwest, except for six steamy months in Florida when I was nineteen. Currently, I reside in the suburbs of St. Paul, Minnesota with my family. The college town of Northfield featured in Anabel’s Adventures is just down the road a jaunt.
I love, love, love connecting with readers. Comments, posts, reviews, and emails are always welcome. Follow my blog or like me on Facebook to be aware of events and giveaways, or new books I’m publishing.
Thanks again for reading my books and supporting this indie author!
Templand / Permland by Jill Elaine Hughes
Amazon Buy Link
The heroine, Melanie Evers, is a plucky young working-class woman from Akron, Ohio struggling to support herself in Chicago in the post-9-11 economy. TEMPLAND follows Melanie’s journey through the temporary employment world from a college student on “just a summer job” to a 28-year-old woman with a lot of intelligence (and a heap of student loan debt to match) through multiple layoffs and a series of ever-more-wacky temp assignments, as she struggles not only to survive, but also to find romance and always remain true to the honest, working-class values instilled in her by her beloved grandfather.
In her long, solitary journey through Templand, Melanie encounters adventure and romance on her search for that always-elusive Permanent Job—which she finally gets, along with her man. TEMPLAND is a highly entertaining, wickedly funny social satire, contemporary romance, and mystery novel all rolled into one.
Excerpt:
This morning I got up and dialed the temp agency.  The recruiters all say you can call them as early as 7 am and someone will be there to take the “same-day requests”—the jobs that come in at the last minute. The temp agency brochures all describe—in glossy, four-color detail—the urgent job requests the temp agencies supposedly get at all hours, the jobs that the smiling, well-dressed temp recruiters all promise will be available for me within hours after registering with their agencies as a Temporary Office Associate.
Temp agency recruiters get paid on commission. (Used car salesmen do, too.)
The pile of dog-eared brochures from Kelly Services, Loftus & O’Meara, PeoplePower, Legal Helpers, and a dozen more agencies sit on my dresser, each of them promising all sorts of glamorous, important temp jobs:
“A middle manager calls Kelly Services at 5:02 pm on Thursday requesting a receptionist for 7:30 Friday morning, because the regular receptionist went into premature labor at 4:59 p.m. and they just can’t go without.  This is where the Kelly Girl comes in!”
“A trial lawyer whose secretary quit the day before calls Loftus & O’Meara Legal Staffing at 6:54 a.m., begging for someone to come in and transcribe his trial notes into a brief so he can get it to the judge in time.  You’re the one who saves the day!”
No matter how much those glossy brochures swear that there are thousands of job opportunities just like these each and every day in Chicago, as one jobless day runs into the next, I think it’s beginning to look a lot like false advertising.
I’ve been calling in to the temporary agency—well, all my agencies since I’m registered with at least 15 of them right now—-every morning at 7:00 a.m., and then at 7:30 a.m., 8:00 am and every five minutes thereafter, every morning, all week, all month, hoping that there will be something for me to do—some phone to answer or some scribbles to type—so I can get paid and buy food and pay rent this week, (and we are not even talking about paying the student loans this month, and the credit cards are just plain ridiculous), but there is nothing.
Nothing. Not a single, solitary, lowdown, unsecure, no-benefits, no sick-days, no-self-esteem temp assignment to be had anywhere in the Windy City.
When I call all the recruiters I get the same excuses over and over again:
“No, sorry, nothing has come in this week, Melanie.  Call back later this morning.”
“Sorry, we haven’t had any new job orders in weeks.  The agency is even letting people go from our office since we’re getting no commissions.”
“Call tomorrow.  I am absolutely positive that we will have something tomorrow.”
 “We’ve been in the Chicago temping business thirty years and it has just never been this bad, I mean really honey, it’s nothing against you but—“
“Call next week.  We just got a big order for proofreaders at Kirkland & Ellis for a class-action lawsuit project next week, and Melanie, we know that you really know your proofreading, so we will be sure to call you.”
“No, sorry, Kirkland & Ellis cancelled that big order.  They decided to use their in-house staff. The judgments, they just aren’t what they used to be you know, so they’re cutting back on all their hiring. Call back the week after next.”
They used to call Chicago the City That Works.  So much for that.
SEQUEL TO TEMPLAND.
It’s the beginning of 2003, a few months after the end of TEMPLAND. Melanie Evers is back as she struggles under the insane demands of her long-sought
Permanent Job.  Now a human resources executive at Marquette Bank, what started out as a cushy well-paid job turns into a nightmare when her company is bought out by a Dutch conglomerate.  Melanie gets sent on a new series of wacky adventures as she tries to keep her head above water while her crazy new boss Pietra controls her every move, the Iraq War begins, and her boyfriend Dave is called up by the Army reserves to fight overseas. Is permanent employment
really all it’s cracked up to be?
Excerpt:
There’s nothing more permanent in this world than death.  And I learned just how permanent death and dying is at a very early age.
In spring 1984, my parents were at each others’ throats.  Dad’s sales job at the copier company was going nowhere, and since Dad’s paltry commissions weren’t enough to cover the mortgage and basic expenses, Mom decided to go back to work as a meter maid, the job she’d held in the City of Akron before she got married.  But we were living in Canton, Ohio at the time— a town that has only eight parking meters—so the job prospects for a meter maid there were pretty limited.  After coming up empty-handed after submitting her meter-maid application to Canton City Hall, Mom decided to take a job as a cashier at the local McCrory’s five and dime.  It paid $3.75 an hour—a nickel over minimum wage.
Dad was not impressed.  “I don’t see how some minimum-wage job is gonna make up for a slow year down at Xerox,” he growled.  “In a good year I can pull in thirty grand.” Thirty grand a year wasn’t exactly high living for a family of three, even in 1984.
“But you aren’t pulling thirty grand.  Not anymore,” my mother replied.
“Why do you always gotta criticize, Thel? It ain’t my fault it’s a slow year.  It ain’t my fault I can never get a break.” He opened a fresh pack of Trues and started to chain-smoke, blowing blue menthol fumes across the kitchen.
“At least I’m doing something to help instead of wallowing around in self-pity,” Mom snapped, and turned to me.  “Melanie, I’ve been after your father for years to get out of the copier business.  Too unstable.  Everyone who was ever going to buy copiers already bought them years ago.  But does he listen to me?  No.”  Mom was washing dishes by hand instead of running the dishwasher to help save on the electric bill.  We were always doing things like that at my house growing up, even when sales were good for Dad at Canton Xerox World and Copier Supply.  Things like pressing together scraps of Safeguard, Ivory, and Irish Spring leftover from the sink soapdish to make one big soap the whole family would use in the shower.  Washing and reusing Baggies three and four times apiece (or until they just fell apart) in our brown-bag lunches.  Endless spaghetti dinners, followed by endless spaghetti leftovers. Tuna Helper, Hamburger Helper, Spam.  Generic cereal.  Powdered milk.  No family vacations, no Atari set or white Nike gym shoes like the rest of the kids on our block—instead I got purple Traxx from Kmart and a used Pong set Mom found at a garage sale.
I never complained, though.  I knew better.  Mom was too good at making me feel guilty.  Even though my grandparents weren’t Catholic, they’d sent Mom to twelve years of Catholic school back in Sparkling Falls because the rural Ohio public schools were so awful. And by the time she graduated high school, not only had my mother fully converted to Catholicism, she’d more than mastered the nuns’ subtle art of Catholic guilt manipulation for making children behave.
Take the year I was in the first grade, for instance. Sales were down at Canton Xerox World and Copier Supply that year too, so there wasn’t much money for new school clothes. On the first day of school, Mom dressed me in a red velvet jumpsuit my grandmother had made me from a Simplicity pattern, along with a pair of leather saddle shoes Mom bought at the local Saint Vincent de Paul store.  The shoes were of good quality and hardly worn at all, but in 1981, leather saddle shoes weren’t exactly high fashion among the first-grade set.  When I told my mother I’d rather have a pair of blue KangaROOS, like the ones they had for sale at Stride Rite down at the Canton Mall, Mom said I mentioned anything about not liking my saddle shoes again she’d feed me a bar of Irish Spring for dinner.
Mom did enough complaining for all of us.  She complained about Dad’s job not paying enough, she complained about our house being too small, she complained that her pink foam curlers didn’t set her hair properly. She complained about not having a car of her own and having to take the dirty, slow city bus everywhere. She complained about our furnace rattling too much, and when she hired a repairman to fix the rattling, then she complained that the repairman was too expensive. She complained about the price of chicken at Kroger’s being too high, she complained about Walgreen’s not stocking her favorite shade of lipstick anymore, and she complained when Prell shampoo changed its formula from green, thick, and in a tube to blue, runny, and in a bottle.
But Mom complained more during her first week working at the local McCrory’s than I’d ever heard her complain before.
She came home after her first day complaining about her feet hurting.  “I’ve never stood on my feet for so long in my life,” she said.  “At least when I was a meter maid they gave me a little scooter to ride around on.”
Dad snorted from behind his evening paper.  “Hrumph.  So now you know how hard it is to do a day’s work,” Dad said, triumphant.  “Now maybe you won’t be so quick to criticize me all the time.”
“I hardly think so,” Mom said.  “You spend your whole workday behind a desk talking on the telephone.  I stood on my feet behind a cash register all day.  I even spent an hour stocking shelves with the new shipment of Tide they got in this week.  Now that’s physical labor. You’ve never done a day of physical labor in your life, Andrew.  My feet hurt like the dickens and my back feels like somebody shot me through with a bow and arrow, but at least I’m doing something to help this family along financially.  You haven’t brought any commissions home in over a month.  Nothing!  Not one red cent.”
“Thel, I told you when I gave you permission to go back to work not to lord that over my head like that—“
“Permission, Andrew?  You gave me permission to work?  Now see here—”
“That’s right, Thel.  An’ I can take that permission away from you just as fast as I give it.  Love, honor and obey—that’s what your marriage vow to me was, Thelma.  Or don’t you remember that?”
“Andrew, goddamn you to hell—“
The next thing I knew, Mom threw a box of raspberry Jello at Dad, who retaliated with a cheese grater.  Rather than get in the middle of that, I retreated to my room to play with my Barbies and went to bed without any dinner.  My parents were arguing and throwing cooking utensils at each other in our tiny galley kitchen until well past midnight.
Things went on that way for several more weeks.  Mom spent more and more time at McCrory’s, and less and less time at home.  Every night she came home and told us stories about what she did that day at the five and dime.  “They got a new shipment of Spam in this week, real good price.  I’ll bring some home with me tomorrow and we’ll eat it for Sunday dinner,” she’d say one day.  But then, the next day she’d say, “Sold out that whole damn shipment of Spam in one day.  Can you believe that?  Looks like Tuna Helper again on Sunday.”
As the weeks and months wore on, Mom really started to like working at McCrory’s.  All the women she knew around Canton would drop by on their weekly errands to chat with her, so she was in on all the town gossip.
“Melanie, did you know that stupid Dr. Foxworthy down at your school is gay?” she said one night after working a double-shift at the store.
“Mom, what’s ‘gay’ mean?”
Mom just laughed.  “Never mind. Andrew, I’ll be working another double tomorrow so I’ll need you to keep an eye on Melanie and the house tomorrow night.” Dad snorted, threw down his newspaper and went out to the garage to tinker with the car.
Even as Mom was putting in lots of hours down at the McCrory’s, Dad was spending less and less time at Canton Xerox and Copier Supply.  Many days he was asleep on the couch when I came home from school.
“Why are you home, Dad?” I asked on the third day I found him zonked on our threadbare avocado couch at three o’clock.
“Can’t make any money at work, sweetheart.  Nobody’s buying copiers these days.  Might as well come home and take a nap.”  Dad stretched back out on the couch, rolled over, and started to snore.  That’s when I noticed the empty bottle of Maker’s Mark on the floor underneath the coffee table.
I shrugged my shoulders and went upstairs to do my homework. I didn’t have my after-school Catholic Catechism Development program that week, so the only homework I had was some spelling words to use in sentences and some history questions.  I was done in less than an hour—a good thing, since by then Mom was putting in so many hours at McCrory’s that I often ended up making dinner.  After I finished my homework I went to the kitchen to rummage around in the cabinets for something I knew how to cook.
I settled on packaged macaroni and cheese with a side of microwaved frozen peas and some Pillsbury rolls from a cardboard tube.  Mom usually got home from her day at McCrory’s—where she’d recently been promoted to assistant floor manager—by seven.  I planned to have dinner on the table at seven-thirty.
Seven-thirty came and went. The macaroni got cold and gummy on the table, because with Mom not home and Dad zonked on the couch so drunk I couldn’t budge him, I felt funny about eating alone.  I stared at my congealing mac and cheese for nearly forty-five minutes before I finally relented and stuck my plate in the microwave to reheat it.
But before I could even shut the microwave door, the phone rang.  I picked it up on the second ring.
“Evers residence,” I said, as I had been taught to do when my parents couldn’t come to the phone.
A worried old-lady voice was on the other end.  I could hear a lot of other people chattering in the background.  And I thought I heard sirens, too. “I need to speak to Andrew Evers, please,” said the voice.
“I’m sorry, he can’t come to the phone right now.  May I take a message?”
“Sweetheart, this is kind of an emergency.  Is your dad there?”
“I’ll try to get him,” I said, and set the receiver on the counter.
I went to Dad on the couch and started to shake him.  He didn’t budge. I shook him again—nothing. That’s when I thought of something I’d seen on TV once and decided to try it on Dad. I went back into the kitchen and filled a plastic pitcher full of cold water.  I went back to the living room and poured the entire thing on Dad’s face.
“Wha—-Melanie!  What the fucking hell?  Are you trying to kill me?”
“Dad, you have an important phone call.”
Dad started to roll over towards the wall.  “Take a message.”
“I can’t.  They said it’s an emergency.  I think it’s about Mom.  She’s not home yet.”
Dad glanced at his watch.  His face turned gray, and he became completely sober in an instant.  He got up and went to the kitchen without speaking.
I crept around the corner to listen, hiding just behind the louvered pantry door.
“Uh huh,” Dad said, his voice flat and emotionless.  “Yeah.  No.  No, she was fine when she left the house this morning.  No.  No.  I have no idea.  Which hospital?  Okay, okay.  We’ll be right there.”
Dad hung the receiver of the yellow rotary-dial phone into its cradle on the kitchen wall.  “Melanie, get your coat.”
“But what about dinner?  Aren’t you going to eat?  And I’m not finished eating yet—“
“Get your coat.  Your mom’s in the hospital.  Something’s happened.”
“What?”
“I don’t know.  They aren’t sure.  Just get your goddamn coat and let’s go.”
Dad had used three swear words with me in the past two minutes, and one of them was goddamn, so this was definitely serious.  For a moment I didn’t know what to do—I stood in the tiny foyer between our kitchen and our breakfast nook, my purple Traxx glued to the dirty linoleum.  Dad was already halfway into his coat and heading out to the garage.
“Melanie, come on!  Jesus H. Christ.”
I left the mac and cheese to rot on the table, the door to the empty Radar Range still hanging open, and followed Dad out to our beat-up green Corolla without a coat or hat.
10 Things You Didn’t Know About TEMPLAND
1. The author Jill Elaine Hughes wrote the book ten years ago during work breaks at — you guessed it — a temp job.
2. The book landed the author her first literary agent, circa 2004. Said agent shopped it all over the New York publishing houses, who liked it but turned it down because they said it lacked “shelf category” (i.e., there was no “New Adult” genre back then.)
3. The book was written before the Great Recession, but given the struggles today’s youth has with unemployment, underemployment, and a lack of good permanent jobs, TEMPLAND seems even more relevant today than when it was first written.
4. The author modeled the heroine Melanie’s grandfather on her own grandpa—or “Papaw,” as she likes to call him.
5. TEMPLAND contains a murder mystery subplot.
6. The heroine Melanie Evers’ sleazy ex-boyfriend Phil is fluent in Farsi. This is integral to the plot.
7. The book depicts many real locations and establishments in the city of Chicago, including the now-defunct Zephyr Ice Cream Restaurant.
8. The author had given up on getting TEMPLAND published until reader demand for New Adult titles about starting your career led her to give it new life through self-publishing — and reader interest has been amazing!
9. If you’ve never heard of Green River Soda before (a cult favorite in Illinois), you learn about it in this book.
10. Several of the wacky bosses and co-workers Melanie encounters on her temp assignments were inspired by real people the author met during her own temp-work stints.
Synopsis
The Saving Angels Series continues…
A new cast is introduced, while journeys already taken start to merge with the present, leading you down the old Red Dirt Road.
Death has always seemed just one step behind Layla Hill, taking almost everyone she’s ever loved. After she loses the love of her life, Layla vows to never love again—how could she, when she’s a death magnet?
Trying to outrun fate traveling with her uncle Willie and his band, Layla meets Michael Roberts, a beautiful Irish boxer as gentle on the piano as he is brutal in the ring. He proves as relentless in life, fighting for a place in her world even as she pushes him away, trying to protect him from her killer tendencies.
But neither foresees the sinister presence waiting for Layla at the end of the Red Dirt Road.
Meet the Author
Born and raised in New Orleans, Annie has a habit of shortening her words and telling long stories. She speaks with a southern flair and cooks with it too. At the tender age of twenty- one, she hitched up her wagons (took her first plane ride) and moved out west to the big shake (California). Her writing career began one sleepless night when she imagined a gorgeous woman and a man with maniacal hair floating above her like lightening bugs falling from the sky. Curious about them, their story, and why they were floating around in her head, she sat down and penned (typed) her first novel, Marigny Street. A dream come true for her, she hasn’t stopped writing since. She loves a damn good love story, always has, no matter what the genre. She is particularly moved by imperfect love that in its own unique way is perfect, the notion of love at first sight, soul mates, and things that are generally out of the norm.
When she’s not writing she enjoys dabbling in photography and finding new, inspirational music to add to her collection. She currently (still) resides in the big shake (although her southern roots are calling her home) with her husband, daughter, and their two peculiar dogs, Boudreaux and Tabasco (who, call her crazy, bark with an accent).
EXCERPT from Veiled
I made a speech prior to booking the wedding date that there would be no sex the week before we got married. I wanted our wedding night to be special. Now, I think I will be struggling with this decision. I plan to make sure I get plenty before our wedding week begins. I am wearing Rich’s favorite little black halter dress that barely covers my bum and shows just enough of my cheeks to drive him wild. He loves it. I have been a little bit naughty. Okay, very naughty. I am not wearing underwear and have added my black stilettos. Perfect. My hair is down, exactly the way he likes it, and no makeup. This is how my baby likes to see me.
“Honey, I’m home,” Rich yells as he comes through the door, looking all hot and sweaty from his run. He always goes for a three to five mile run after work. He is a fitness freak some-times, so I would love for him to take a day off from running once in a while..
“Hi,” I say leaning against the doorway in a suggestive manner, my arm above my head in the full-on come and get me pose. “Oh. Wow, are you trying to kill me, Jen?” He winks. “Never.” I giggle, hoping I am killing him. I plan to make that man work his ass off after dinner. “Quick shower and I am all yours, baby girl,” he says, placing a little peck on my lips before smacking my bum and running up the stairs. Rich began calling me baby girl the second time we saw each other. I can’t help but blush when he says it, even after all this time together. I sit myself on a bar stool in the kitchen and wait for him. He is only gone for five minutes because he takes quick showers when I am not with him. If I didn’t have a nice meal planned, I would join him. I might take him for another one later. “I am back, baby girl,” Rich announces as he walks into the kitchen wearing only black trousers. His bare chest on full display and his perfect back sparkling from the water that is left on him. His hair is also wet. He looks so… Food first. We need to eat first I try to convince myself.
Along with his returning memories, he finds evidence that his daughter and grandson are in grave danger from a brutal killer with a grudge. But he also discovers a side to his personality that only comes out during his blackouts: a superhero with telepathic powers. Author picGregory Carrico is a former dental practice management consultant and software trainer. Abandoning his dream of working the daily grind until death, he was forced into the thankless life of a fiction writer. Now an Amazon.com Best Selling horror and science fiction writer, as well as a 2013 HFA Author of the Year Finalist, he finds a small degree of succor in crafting despicable bad guys and then tricking readers into caring about them.
When not creating new worlds and plotting their destruction, he advocates for adopting rescue dogs, and politely urges slower drivers to get out of the passing lane.
The Shadow of the World, Book One of Sand: Amazon
Excerpt:
The sand was back. It stirred in shadowy corners of Wayne’s mind, threatening to whip into a debilitating storm. His psychiatrist from prison thought his description of the Sand was a good metaphor for the confused state that always preceded his blackouts. To Wayne, it was no metaphor.
He had suffered these attacks for three years and thought he had finally overcome them. He even dared to hope they would never return. But he knew the warning signs. Another attack was coming.
Confusion settled over his mind like a dense cloud of dust, making simple concentration a chore. It added a touch of gloss to his eyes and a hint of weight to his eyelids.
The herd of Friday, end-of-shift hospital employees crowded the hallway. He shambled along with them, letting them corral him toward the elevators.
He had promised the HR manager he would leave the hospital directly, but he had to make one more stop. It wasn’t like they could fire him again. They had already played that hand. Twice.
Darth Vader’s theme music marched from his pocket. He had jokingly assigned the ringtone to Garret Owens, the hospital’s managing director and Wayne’s oldest friend. A couple of jackasses walking near him reached for their phones, too. Idiots.
Fishing the phone from his pocket, he ducked into an alcove by a door labeled “Private.” He reached for the ID badge he no longer had, to unlock it, but settled for facing the corner. It was a little more private than running with the lemmings in the main hall, so he answered his phone.
“Garret. I’m glad you called,” Wayne said, his distracted tone contradicting his words.
“What the hell, Wayne?” Garret asked. He sounded like he was talking through clenched teeth.
“I’m in six or seven different hells at the moment. Which one are we talking about?” The important-looking envelope in his pocket held a signed copy of his termination notice. Garret must have just found out. Their friendship since childhood was already under serious strain.
“I just hung up with Ryan from HR. What’s this noise about you harassing the cafeteria cashier this morning? Someone told security you were screaming at each other.”
The sand had crept out of the corners, and was blowing unfettered through Wayne’s mind. He stayed calm with a Herculean effort. The shit storm falling on his epically horrible day showed no signs of abating, and the loud argument with his daughter in front of customers had only been the opening bell.
“I’m sorry, Garret. I really am, but…”
Excerpt:
~Nari~
I pushed him back against the wall by his taut chest, never disconnecting my lips from his, and kissed him like I was starving for this one thing. Starving for him.
And I so was.
I couldn’t breathe, and I didn’t care. There was nothing else in this world but him and me, and I soaked it up like a dry sponge. He nipped my lip at the same time his hand savored the bare skin at the small of my back under my shirt.
It sent a rush of blood to every nook and corner of my body, giving me a euphoric high. I pressed myself further against him, but it wasn’t enough.
And I knew he felt the same when he slid his hands over my backside down to the inside of my thighs, picking me up off the ground. I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist and let him lay me down along the cold, hard rock below.
I wanted him. So badly, I wanted him. Desire pooled in my gut, just for him. And I could feel he wanted me just as badly. I grinned against his hot lips and suppressed a giggle—knowing the others were just an earshot away.
Knight Blindness by Chris Karlsen
KnightBlindness HighRes
Ready for battle, Medieval English knight, Stephen Palmer, charges into the French enemy’s cavalry line. Heeding a warning given months before, he hesitates as he comes face-to-face with the knight in the warning. Struck down in the year 1356, he finds himself landing in the year 2013. Grievously wounded, he’s taken to a nearby hospital. Confused by the new world surrounding him, he attempts to convince the staff he’s from another time, only to find they think him mad.
Rescued by friends, who, to his surprise, have also come through time, he must find a way to function in this odd modern England. He is quickly enchanted by the kind Esme Crippen, the young woman hired to tutor him. She too is enchanted by him. Tempted to deepen the relationship, she hesitates thinking him adorable, but mad. He must discover the means for getting her to believe the truth, all the while, unknown to him, he didn’t come forward in time alone. The enemy knight has also traveled to 2013.
French noble, Roger Marchand, doesn’t question why the English knight who charged him hesitated. That fraction of a pause gave him the advantage needed and he brought his sword down upon the Englishman’s helmet hard, unhorsing the knight. He moved to finish the Englishman off when the world changed in a rush of sensations as he is ripped through time.
Seeking a reason for the terrible event, he enters a nearby chapel. There, thinking God has chosen him for a quest to turn French defeat that day in 1356 to victory, he sets out to find the English knight. The man he is convinced holds the key to time. If he returns to the day of the battle, he can warn his king of mistakes that snatched victory from them.
We Roam the Seas by Theresa Marguerite Hewitt
we roam cover
The warm late summer breeze meets her face as Freya stands on the edge of the cliff; her eyes closed enjoying the feeling. Her home of the Shetland Islands main isle is beautiful in summer and she loves to spend her days like this; walking with her best and most trusted friend Eska.
“Your father will kill me if he knows I let you that close to the edge lass,” there is an edge of fear in the young man’s voice and Freya turns her green
eyes on her friend, seeing his slightly taller than her frame standing with his arms crossed over his bare muscular chest. She just gives him a smile and
shakes her head, turning her face back out to the sea and watching the waves crash into the grey stone of the cliffs.
Her father is always over protective of her, but even more so since she was twelve and her mother died of the fever. That was twelve summers ago and Freya is still working on getting her freedom from her Chief father, Ivan the Good, and her five older brothers. The thought of her mother and brothers makes her frown and her outstretched arms fall to her sides, swishing in her already dirty, simple brown dress with her favorite green apron holding in the young apples she has gathered.
Two of her brothers, Folkvar and Hoakon, helped her father rule the main isle with little villages of their own posted on the northern and southern points
while the other three brothers, Lund, Rune and Arik, held posts on two of the out skirting islands; a first line in defense if they should be attacked. Their
islands have been peaceful ever since before Freya was born and since her mother’s death, her father has let priests from the east introduce Christianity
to his people; mingling the teaching with those of their traditional Gods.
She takes a long look out over the waves, taking in the salty smell and the everlasting call of the seagulls, smiling to herself as she turns to her friend. “My father will be fine because what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, right Eska?” She smiles, lightly slapping him on the shoulder as his brown eyes track her movement past him.
Being a son of former slaves in England, Eska was only a toddler when Ivan had taken his parents from their home and brought them back here on the last of his raiding trips. He carries the slight Scottish accent that his parents passed down to him along with the blonde hair from his mother. As he smiles and shakes his head, following his friend as she walks down the path away from the cliff, he takes in her scent as the wind blows it slowly to him.
Being of lower birth, Eska should not love her, but he does. He has loved her since the day he first saw her cuddled in a bear skin playing with a doll in the great hall at her father’s feet. They have been inseparable since. His parents have told him numerous times to move on and marry a girl of his own status, a nice farmer girl, one from the village but he doesn’t want any of the plump, already deflowered girls. He wants the petite yet curvy, strong willed,
reddish-brown haired daughter of the Chief and has asked Ivan for her hand in marriage twice over, being turned down apologetically each time.
“I’m sorry son, but she is not ready to be married. Her soul still sails in the wind and roams the waves,” Ivan had told him both times, his massive worn hand on Eska’s shoulder, squeezing it caringly like a father. He has treated Eska’s family well, giving them a home and throwing work at his father when they needed the help. Ivan is a good leader, but Eska wishes that he would see that he too, can be a great man and husband to his daughter.
“Eska!” the urgent sound of his name brings him from his musing and mindless following of the one who holds his heart and he casts his brown eyes up, his chin length blonde hair sweeping across his eyes as he finds Freya standing on her tip toes, looking over the edge of a stone wall.
“What is it lass?” he asks, coming to stand at her side and seeing her eyes cast out over the waves once more. Yellow and blue striped sails catch his eye
and he sees the longboats docked on their beach with men mingling around them. His eyes narrow and his ears strain, trying to hear what they are laughing at but the wind carries it away.
“My father didn’t say anything about expecting a landing today?” Freya questioned as a slight fear settled in her heart. The men on the beach had swords at their waists and battle axes strapped on their backs. Their shields lined the sides of their boats, four boats in total, and as they unloaded supplies onto the stony beach of her home, her heart stuttered.
She turns her green eyes to her friend, her long hair blowing across her face as she sees Eska’s head shake. That was the only sign she needed, pushing
herself from the stone wall as the fear and adrenaline mixed in her veins, sending her heart racing. Her legs propel her forward as she picks up her
dress, not wanting to trip as she runs down the worn cart path.
In Love by Design by Tracy Ellen
In Love by Design Release Day Event Synopsis
In Love by Design The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod (Volume III) By Tracy Ellen Cover Art by Samantha Prudhon Falkowski
In Love by Design welcomes you back to Northfield, Minnesota and the life of Anabel Axelrod.
Its official–the sexy, blonde bookstore owner with a sassy attitude, a brain that never stops, and a reluctant penchant for helping her family and friends out of trouble has fallen madly in love.
Anabel doesn’t get to prove what a fabulous girlfriend she’ll make for more than eight hours before Luke disappears out of town. Instead of getting to enjoy being a girl passionately in love, Anabel’s shiny new feelings and trust in her boyfriend are immediately being tested.
Who is the darkly powerful and charismatic Luke Drake? What are his secrets? Does he really love Anabel, or has he been manipulating her to further an intricate plan of cold revenge in the making for over twenty years?
This third book in the series finds the confident Anabel desperately needing her sense of humor and all her understanding of human nature to deal with life. But Anabel soon learns the hard way she has even bigger issues to worry about than family problems and an incredibly hot, but very tricky boyfriend.
She’s made some bad enemies recently and someone wants her dead. After the first attempt on her life, Anabel and Luke team up to solve this mystery, but Anabel is beginning to wonder if she can trust her Dark Prince. Or Is this one fairy tale where love does not conquer all?
Meet the Author
Meet Tracy Ellen…
For all of my life, I’ve always had a thing for shoes that make me say “Oh, yum!” and for reading romance novels written about hot, dangerously smart men and sassy, intelligent women. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve avidly read everything I could get my greedy little hands on to find these jewels.
One day this past year or so, I realized that I spend more money on books now than I do on shoes–and I was stunned. Should I be ashamed of this fact or proud? Then an even stranger thing happened. It was like a switch turned off/on inside me. All of a sudden instead of wanting to read about diabolically sexy men, I wanted to write my own story of the building hot romance between a lippy, confident woman and a gorgeously mysterious man.
So began my budding writing career. Then I made another happy discovery—I absolutely love writing and still have a thing for shoes! Since then, my self-published books include A Date with Fate and Courted by Karma in The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod series. The third book in the series, In Love by Design will be released in September 2013.
For those of you who may want to know some pertinent facts: I was born in Indiana to middle-class parents, the third out of five hellions. My mother wanted to go to work every day. I’ve always lived in the Midwest, except for six steamy months in Florida when I was nineteen. Currently, I reside in the suburbs of St. Paul, Minnesota with my family. The college town of Northfield featured in Anabel’s Adventures is just down the road a jaunt.
I love, love, love connecting with readers. Comments, posts, reviews, and emails are always welcome. Follow my blog or like me on Facebook to be aware of events and giveaways, or new books I’m publishing.
Thanks again for reading my books and supporting this indie author!
The Prophecy by C. David Belt
Prophecy Banner
Title: The Prophecy (The Children of Lilith Volume 3)
Author: C. David Belt
Genre: LDS, Horror, Vampire
Tour Host: Lady Amber’s Tours
The-Prophecy-Cover-Art
Volume 3, The Prophecy:
For 6,000 years, Lilith and her Children have walked the earth, hunting, preying, seducing, corrupting, ruling from the shadows…until now.
An ancient prophecy, spoken by Adam, Lilith’s grandfather, foretells her doom. She will do anything, corrupt any innocent, murder countless mortals to save herself.  To survive, she knows she must destroy Carl and Moira Morgan.  The war has begun.  And Carl and Moira know, win or lose, it all ends here.
Excerpt::
“‘Sons of God! Brood of Light-Bearer who fell!’ That is how I would render the first half.”
The message is in plain text. The email address looks like a random mix of letters and numbers, and the email provider is one that supports anonymous accounts.
I’ve been collaborating with colleagues across the country and in the U.K., Israel, and Egypt for more than a week. We’ve been trying to decipher the twenty-four syllables of Adamic (at least I assume it’s Adamic) that Lilith uttered at the battle at the farm. My colleagues are experts in Hebrew, Arabic, Egyptian, Greek, and Latin. We’ve been exchanging emails ever since I asked for their help.
Of course, I’ve told them I’m not at liberty to reveal the source just yet, but I’m certain it’s a language that predated all others, a protolanguage. In the beginning, some refused to collaborate on the project because I wouldn’t reveal my source, because I was being cryptic. But eventually, most couldn’t resist the lure of the puzzle. That’s something we all share in common, my colleagues and I: we can’t resist the potential, the lure of hidden knowledge.
And of course, I can’t tell my academic friends that the source is a native speaker. I also can’t tell them that the text is an outburst from a six-thousand-year-old vampire after she’d been impaled by the very spear that once pierced Christ’s side, a spear being wielded by a former Nazi assassin who is now a repentant vampire.
In other words, I can’t betray my friends.
The-Penitent-Cover-Art
Volume 2, The Penitent:
In 6,000 years, no vampire has ever defied Lilith, Queen of the vampires…until now.
Moira and Carl Morgan have saved the city from the horror of Michael and his evil wives, but victory has come at terrible cost.  And there are consequences to every choice, every victory.  Word has spread that someone has broken Lilith’s power, that someone has defied the ancient Queen of the vampires.   And she’s not happy about it.
Excerpt:
There’s something seriously wrong with me.
I cannae Sleep.
Or, to be more precise, I dinnae want to Sleep. And since I can catch a full day’s rest only once each week, abstaining could have . . . consequences. It makes me irritable. It affects my judgment. It in-creases the ever-present likelihood that I might . . . slip up.
And if I slip up, people die.
Ach! I’m so hungry!
’Tis another thing that’s worrying me. I should nae be hungry! Nae even a wee bit! I Fed just after sunrise! We both did. Carl, my husband, and I consumed two quarts each just before we went to bed. ’Twas a bit of a luxury, those two quarts. One should’ve been sufficient, enough for a week in a pinch. But here I am, lying in bed beside my Sleeping husband, and all I can think of is how hungry I am, how tired I am, and how much I dread going to Sleep!
’Tis nae use.
I rise from bed. Carl does nae notice. To all appearances he could be dead. I slip into my dressing gown and make my way to the living room. I take several turns about the room as I try desperately to think of something else, anything other than my hunger, my weariness, and my fear.
A scratching sound! Aye, lassie, focus on that. Someone’s at my flow-er bed again, digging it up. And I’m nigh certain I know who ’tis. That’s twice this year. I should peek out and catch . . . but, nae, ’tis the side facing the Sun.
My stomach growls.
Perhaps just a wee pint more.
I walk into the kitchen. Though nobody’s watching me, I try to keep my pace casual, walking, strolling as if I’m nae in a hurry, as if I’m nae desperate to get there. Why do I bother? There’s nary a soul to see me. Who am I trying to deceive? Myself?
I open the refrigerator, and the cold air transports the sweet fra-grance to my nostrils. To be sure, ’tis tainted by the odor of the preservative, but that cannae mask the nectar of . . .
There! Outside! Something far sweeter than the contents of my icebox!
Evil.
Though I cannae smell it just yet, I can feel the general direction.
Quickly I close the refrigerator and head to the window. A cau-tious glance, while I carefully stay in the shadows, reveals nothing about the source of the evil, but it does show an overcast sky.
I shudder with relief, and my mouth begins to water. In a trice, I rush to the door and throw open the chest beside it. This is my emergency kit. I retrieve all the things I need: the bottle of heavy-duty spray-on sunscreen, the sweatpants, sweatshirt, gloves, boots, sun-glasses, cloak, and hood. In just a few seconds, I’ve applied every bit of protection. Only at this point, when I’m prepared, do I pause for a wee tick to be sure there’s still a reason to venture outside.
Aye, the evil’s still there. Sweet corruption.
I open the front door quietly so as not to alert anyone to my pre-sence. Aye, but I want to throw it open!
And the scent of pure evil washes over me. The honeyed fragrance engulfs my senses. Drool spills from my eager lips.
So close!
The familiar rage builds like a smithy furnace stoked by a bellows within me. Here! In my very neighborhood, practically on my front lawn!
Through the red haze of my wrath, I barely notice that my flower beds are indeed torn up, the destroyer having fled. I dinnae care for that. The one I Hunt now has done far worse than petty vandalism. Nae, the evil I smell can be caused only by murder and violence.
The scent turns my head to the southwest. I cannae see the source, but the direction is certain. I follow the airborne spoor across the street and to the right toward . . . Aye! That open garage! ’Tis the Mur-phys’ home. I can see two cars, neither one of them running. Now I can hear voices—hushed but emphatic voices.
“. . . my money, cabrón?”
I dinnae recognize the voice.
“Tomorrow! I’ll have it tomorrow!”
That voice I recognize. ’Tis Aaron Murphy. I dinnae know the the family well since they are nae in my ward, but Aaron’s the oldest boy in the family. He’s plays football or baseball or some other sport at the high school. I do hope he’s nae the source of the evil.
I approach the garage with all stealth, fighting hard to contain the mounting rage and the ravenous hunger.
“You said that yesterday, man. And the day before that. You been hiding from me!”
“I swear, Manny! Tomorrow!”
“You don’t get it, muchacho. I give you product. You sell it to your little friends at school. You give me my money. I give you more product. You sell it. You give me money. You get to go on making everyone think you just a good little Mormon boy. That’s how it works.”
“Please, Manny!”
“Not this time, cabrón! I gotta teach you a lesson. Today, I’m just gonna break your fingers.”
I round a corner of the garage and take in the whole scene. In the confined space between a compact car on the left and the Murphy fam-ily’s minivan on the right, Aaron, the all-American boy, is pinned a-gainst the larger vehicle, held there by a big Hispanic man complete with bandana, gold chains, tattoos, multiple piercings, and a nasty-looking switchblade. Manny, the thug, has one hand at Aaron’s throat. The other hand holds the knife an inch away from the lad’s eye.
“Next time I cut off one of your fingers, muchacho. Just try catching a football like . . .”
A snarl rips from my throat.
Manny releases the boy and spins to face me. He looks startled, but nae frightened. Aaron’s head snaps in my direction, but he remains rooted to the spot. He looks horrified.
The thug’s face twists in an evil leer. “Beat it, chica. This is none of your business.”
I laugh low and menacingly. “Ach, nae, rat. Ye are my business.”
I step into the shade of the garage, safely out of the muted sun-light. I throw back my hood and pull off my sunglasses, setting them on the trunk of the sedan. I fix Aaron’s eyes with my own and say with Persuasion, “Lad, go stand over there and wait for me while I deal with this.” Aaron’s expression goes slack, and he turns obediently and walks to the far wall of the garage.
I return my gaze to the gangster, who’s staring at Aaron in amaze-ment. “Now, rat,” I say, “face me. Look into my eyes and see the hellfire that awaits ye.”
Manny looks at me, his face a mask of fury. “Listen, puta . . .”
I open my mouth wide, revealing my dripping fangs.
His brown eyes go wide, and the color drains from his face. “Madre de . . . ! ”
I advance toward him, savoring his terror as I will the honeyed sweetness of his evil blood. I want to tear this vermin to shreds . . . after I consume his life.
Still brandishing the knife in one hand, he fumbles at his breast with the other and lifts a rather large and ornate gold cross on its chain. He holds it toward me as a talisman.
I cower back, shielding my face from the crucifix.
Through my fingers, I can see Manny’s face split in a leer of tri-umph. “That’s right, zorra. Now you know who’s . . .”
I straighten up, no longer feigning fear. I shake my head slowly from side to side, laughing softly. “Ooh, did I give ye a wee moment of hope, ratty? That bonnie bit of jewelry cannae protect ye from me.”
The-Unwilling-Cover-Art
Volume 1, The Unwilling:
In all the 6,000 years that the Children of Lilith have walked among us, there has never been an unwilling vampire…until now.
The Unwilling is the story of the world’s first and only unwilling vampire.  Set in present-day Utah, it’s the story of Carl Morgan, a decent LDS man who loses his wife and children in an automobile accident.  Then he witnesses the murder of his wayward sister at the hands of the beautiful and mysterious Rebecca.  When the police can’t find the killer, he goes searching for her.  He finds Rebecca, but she takes away everything.  She transforms him into the world’s FIRST and ONLY unwilling vampire.  Vampirism is a choice, and you’re choosing to become a serial killer, because you can only survive on HUMAN blood, not animal blood.  Carl is unwilling to murder to survive and he really doesn’t understand what has happened to him.  He’s found and mentored by Moira MacDonald, a two-hundred and seventy year-old Penitent (repentant vampire).  She teaches him how to survive without killing, how to stay true to his temple covenants (in spite of his condition), and how to get justice for his murdered sister.  But to Moira?  Carl’s very existence as an unwilling vampire turns her world upside-down, because Carl is an impossibility.  In the 6,000 years that the Children of Lilith have walked the earth, there has never been an unwilling vampire, because eternal damnation cannot be forced on someone: they must choose it, just as Moira did.  And yet, there’s Carl.  If he can exist somehow, there must be something about Moira’s condition that she doesn’t know.  Is it possible that, after two and a half centuries of searching for redemption and repentance with no hope, perhaps there might somehow be a way back?  Meanwhile, Rebecca’s vampire Master, Michael, plans to unleash a wave of new vampires on the city.  Carl and Moira must stop him before countless innocents are slaughtered.
Excerpt:
“Where am I?” I ask.
She hesitates a moment and then replies, “Ye are in my home. Do ye know how ye got here?”
Now I’m getting worried. “My memory’s a bit fuzzy. Sorry.”
“Ye carried a young woman into the emergency room at the LDS Hospital. She was unconscious and covered in blood. Ye were stag-gerin’ about and yellin’ incoherently. Ye frightened everyone. We took the young woman and attended to her, but ye collapsed. I thought it best nae to let the staff examine ye. So, I brought ye here and tended to ye myself.”
The girl. Yes, I remember the girl. “Is she OK?” I ask.
Moira nods slowly. “Aye, she’s fine. Some blood loss, but she’ll live. Ye did nae kill her.”
Kill her? What?
“W . . . why would I kill her?” I stammer. “What’re you talking about?”
She stares at me again. She seems to be holding some kind of internal debate. Her eyes narrow as she comes to a decision.
“Blood,” she says simply.
“What?”
“Blood. Human blood.”
I look at her without understanding, blinking stupidly.
“The drink,” she says. “’Twas human blood.”
In an instant, it all comes back to me.
Michael. Rebecca. Chikah. Benjamin. The Cult. The Ritual. Every-thing.
I think I’m going to throw up.
I lurch to my feet and look around frantically for a bathroom, a sink.
Moira is at my side in an instant. She pulls me toward the kitchen. “Dinnae ruin my carpet, laddie!”
Wow! Her grip is strong!
By the time I reach the sink, the nausea has passed. I lean against the sink all the same. The room is still spinning.
Moira gave me blood to drink. I drank human blood.
And I liked it.
The Best Man’s Baby by Victoria James
Author PicIt is my pleasure to interview Victoria James, author of The Best Man’s Baby. Welcome to Room With Books, Victoria!
First let me give you a little background on Victoria.
Victoria James always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples) and a cardboard cover and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.
 In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill the dream of writing romantic fiction.
 Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Victoria loves connecting with readers, you can find her online at:

Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter / Website

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1.  Tell me a little about The Best Man’s Baby and what inspired you to write it?
The Best Man’s Baby is book two in my Red River Series.  It’s about two opposite people facing the repercussions of what was supposed to only be a one night stand. Claire is the ultimate good-girl, and Jake…well, he’s the town bad-boy. Their journey to HEA is filled with self-discovery, passion, laughter and heartache. They are both really strong-willed characters, neither of them willing to back down and surrender their beliefs. But they’re also both holding onto some painful memories, and Jake has a secret past that he must finally confront before moving on with Claire.
I’m not really sure what exactly inspired me to write it, other than the characters themselves. They played a large role in the first book of the Red River Series before I even knew what their story would be. Jake and Claire were really dynamic in that book…and before I knew it, the plot for The Best Man’s Baby was ready to go.
2.  When you start writing do you have the story outlined or do your characters dictate what will happen?
Because I sell on proposal, I do have most of the story mapped out. I tend to stray from the outline as the story progresses. Sometimes the characters have a mind of their own and I just go with the flow!
3.  Have you ever had arguments with your characters and who usually wins?
They always win!
4.  What is one thing about you your readers would be surprised to know?
I’m a total wimp when it comes to scary movies…can’t watch them!
5.  If you could write with any other author who would it be any why?
Judith McNaught. I adore all of her historical romances and became hooked on the genre after I read her books. I’d love to write a historical romance book with her expertise!
6.  When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a writer!
7.  When did you decide to write and what prompted you to start?
I started writing when my son was born (six years ago).  But my writing was very sporadic because I had a new baby, and a full time business, and no maternity leave.  We also moved quite a bit in the last eight years.  But I would write when I could, not losing sight of the goal of publication.  When my daughter was born (2 years ago) I started querying agents and my current agent rejected the manuscript that I’d submitted but told me to send something else along.  Fast forward to a year later and another house move and I did just that-and she offered me representation.  I then sold to Entangled, Indulgence a few months later.
8.  What music inspires your writing?
I make a playlist for each book. Sometimes even before I start the book, I’ll add some songs that I think would be perfect for the mood of that book.
Fun Facts:
What is your favorite breakfast? I’m not a huge breakfast fan…but coffee is a must!
What is your favorite color? Blue
What is your favorite movie? So hard to pick just one…The Pursuit of Happiness is one of my favorites.
What is your dream car (details please)? A Range Rover! Many of the heroes in my books drive one. I’m happy to live vicariously through them 😉
How can my  readers find you? Goodreads / Facebook / Twitter / Website     Amazon / B&N
Thank you for the interview, Victoria, and I wish your all the best with The Best Man’s Baby. Patricia, Room With Books
Cover_The Best Man's BabyFlorist Claire Holbrook has always played by the rules her entire life, but breaks them to spend one night with sexy lone wolf Jake Manning, a man she’s adored since she was a teenager. Six weeks later things get complicated when she discovers they created a bond that will last a lifetime…
Jake has never played by the rules. Getting Minister Holbrook’s daughter pregnant wasn’t part of any life plan, but he won’t run from his responsibilities. He’ll step up and be the best man he can, even if he doesn’t have a clue where to begin. The more time he spends with Claire, though, the more he wants her, and the harder it is to get close because that would mean sharing the one thing he hasn’t with anyone–the truth and his heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

He stood behind her and whispered in her ear. “I’m not leaving.”

She sighed and turned around to look at him. They were standing a few inches apart, and for what had to be the hundredth time in two days he wondered how he’d never noticed her eyes.

Big and bright, but with a soul that hinted at such emotion and fire, it filled him with the need to see how deep it went.

“What are you doing here?”

“Helping.”

“You have never been back here in all the years I’ve been in business.”

“Things are different now. We’re having a baby.”

“Shhhh!” He bit back another grin as she turned her head around wildly to make sure no one had heard.

“Listen, you’re not getting rid of me. I’m here to help. Then when you’re finished, I’m going to take you out for dinner.”

He saw her cheeks flush, then she shook her head. “I have a long day ahead of me. No time for any distractions.”

“Perfect, so afterward you’ll need some time to relax. I’ll take you out to your favorite restaurant.”

“You don’t even know what that is.”

“Then you can tell me.” It was simple, really. He didn’t understand why that would upset her.

“You should know what it is. In the Claire Holbrook world, the father of my child should know my favorite restaurant,” she whispered.

“Just tell me and we’ll go,” he said with a shrug.

She shook her head, her ponytail swinging back and forth with the motion. He wondered what she’d do if he pulled her hair free, letting his hands run through it as it tumbled around her shoulders. He stared at her mutinous expression. She’d probably try to deck him.

“Have you ever been in love?”

 I spill my popcorn on my lap. “I, uh, what?” I say, swiping off the kernels. The question catches me off guard.

“You know, in love.”

“No. No, I haven’t.” I shift on the couch, needing more space between us. “What about you?”

“Nah.” She flicks her hand toward me as if she is brushing away nonsense, but the hard look in her eyes says something different.

“Why?”

She points to the TV screen and the couple making out there. “Figured if you had been, then you could explain that to me.”

The guy sweeps the girl up and carries her into bed before they… you know. “Uh, sex?”

She bursts out laughing. “That too. But I was talking about what  it feels like to be, you know, in love. Totally, without question. Like, does that,” she points to the screen again, “exist?”

“Yeah, I think it exists.” I think of mom and dad—the way they kissed every morning, hugged a few moments longer than anyone else, laughed so hard they cried, and cuddled, shutting out the world, looking more content than these fakers on the screen. “It exists. And in real life, it’s better than that crap.” I say, suddenly uncomfortable by the moaning coming from the TV.

“I thought you said you’ve never been in love?”

“I haven’t. But I’ve seen it. And I haven’t ever seen anything come close to that in the movies.”

he opens her mouth as if about to ask a question, but then closes it and smiles, accepting my answer. “Well, it’s good that there may be something in life to look forward to.” She drops a kernel of popcorn in her mouth.

“May be?”

“Well nothing is guaranteed. Who knows, I may die an old spinster.” She’s smiling, but her eyes aren’t.

I think about the movie store guy’s possessive eyes, Jesse’s chair fiasco, and Dominic’s leering, my heart. “I doubt that.”

Shadow of Perception by Kristine Mason

VBT Shadow of Perception Book Cover Banner

Cover_Shadow of Perception

What happens when negligent plastic surgeons receive a taste of their own medicine…?

Chicago investigative reporter, Eden Risk, receives an unmarked envelope containing a postcard ordering her to watch the enclosed DVD…or someone else dies. No Police. After Eden watches the DVD, a gruesome, horrifying surgery, she turns to the private criminal investigation agency, CORE, for help. Only she hadn’t expected that help to come with a catch. Her former lover, Hudson Patterson, has been assigned to the case.

Hudson would rather have another CORE agent handle the investigation. Two years ago, he’d screwed things up with Eden…bad. And as more DVDs arrive, Eden and Hudson find themselves not only knee-deep in a twisted investigation, but forced to deal with their past, and the love they’d tried to deny.

VBT Shadow of Perception Banner

Hudson cleared his throat and eyed Eden’s cat. “I’ve only seen cats that size at the zoo or in the jungle. What the hell is it? Besides big and ugly.”

“Don’t talk like that.” She cupped Fabio’s only ear. “He’s sensitive.”

Eden had to have snapped at some point during the past two years. Literally. Since when did this woman, this no bullshit, headstrong woman, become all sensitive?

“Whatever, Dr. Doolittle,” he said, hiding his irritation. She could let her guard down, shed her hard as nails persona for a frickin’ cat, but she’d never bothered to make the effort with him.  During those months they’d been together, she’d come willingly to his bed, or she’d invite him to hers. Their pillow talk had been fun and sexy. They had exchanged stories, but never secrets. And after a while, that had bothered him. For the first time…ever, he’d been intrigued by a woman and he’d begun to trust enough to want to give more of himself than he’d ever been willing to in the past. Unfortunately, despite the intimate moments they’d shared, she had kept herself guarded. Instead of trying to find a way to break through her barriers, he’d gone and screwed everything up with her. He’d regretted that night for over two years. And the mistake she’d promised him she would never forgive.

AuthorPic

I didn’t pick up my first romance novel until I was in my late twenties. Immediately hooked, I read a bazillion books before deciding to write one of my own. After the birth of my first son I needed something to keep my mind from turning to mush, and Sesame Street wasn’t cutting it. While that first book will never see the light of day, something good had come from writing it. I realized my passion, and had found a career that I love.

When I’m not writing contemporary romances and dark, romantic suspense novels (or reading them!) I’m chasing after my four kids and two neurotic dogs.

Kiss Me in Paris by Dmytry Karpov and Kimberly Kimrade

KMiP 99cent Sale Banner

It was everything I expected, and more!

I was lost in the story of Cade and Winter from the very beginning. They  captured my heart as they captured each other’s. Too often authors take you  through the typical boy meets girl, tragic  separation, and joyful reunion…the  end. With Kiss Me in Paris I found a beautiful story where friendship developed before the realization that love looms in their future. I was allowed to live  Paris through their adventures, see their relationship grow, and watch them fall  in love through the telling of their story through two sets of  eyes.

This  unique viewpoint is what endeared this novel to me and made me a true follower  of this round the globe series! I am so excited about the places I’ll travel and  the people I’ll meet along the way!

The team of  Kimberly Kinrade and  Dmytry Karpov is a winning combination, making writing  magic along the way!

About Kiss Me in Paris

Kiss Me in Paris by Karpov KinradeNo one knows my secret. Ever since high school, ever since I started living in fear, no one has known the true me. But then I met him, and I couldn’t hide anymore.

He became my hero, saving me from the villain of my past. He became my friend, his smile a blanket of warmth. And he scared me. Because he, this beautiful man, he might become more. Then he’d see the real me, and I couldn’t let that happen.

My name is Winter, and what I desire most I can’t have.

Flashes of the night I was drugged rush back to me. His strong arms carrying me through the streets of Paris. The feel of his heart beating as my head rested against his chest. The soft press of his lips against my forehead when he thought I was asleep.

Oh shit. I’m falling for the cowboy. Cade.

But we can’t be anything more. He has his own secrets. His own darkness he keeps hidden, like the letter he keeps with him everywhere he goes.

The letter he refuses to open.

Excerpt:

I ran so fast I felt one with the wind. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.  Sooner or later my mother would track me down but until then I’ll enjoy myself. As I entered the arcade I heard my name.

“Yo, Eden.”

“Eden! You escaped.”

I smiled as I saw my friends approach. “Yeah I escaped the clutches of the evil demon.”

“You shouldn’t joke about that stuff, it could be real,” said Zoe innocently. Zoe was my best friend and still an innocent. Her boyfriend Mike thought he understood all. Even though they were Nephilim too, I couldn’t let them learn who my father was.

“It is real, Zo. If there are angels, there are demons. You can’t have one without the other.”

“Who says?” I defended as I retrieve the air hockey puck out of the slot and place it on the table. It begins sliding around in a small circle, waiting for me to hit it.

“Says I.” Mike took the position opposite me and waited. I narrowed my eyes and glared at him. Zoe always says I do this thing with my eyes that could make every boy swoon, but I don’t believe it. How could one person’s eyes make someone swoon? As I wacked the air hockey puck, Mike seemed distracted by something, so the puck sailed straight down into my goal at his end. The electronic voice announced the score to be one nil and that seemed to break his reverie.

“Mike, what happened? You were totally out of it.” Zoe placed a hand on his bicep.

“No, I wasn’t.”

“Yes, you were. You totally let Eden win.”

“It was just a lucky shot,” I said in defence. I couldn’t let them think that somehow I had something to do with Mike’s off-with-the-faeries moment. Did I? It couldn’t be possible. I didn’t just cause Mike to space out and act as if he and I were the only ones left on earth? Did I?

“That never happens, baby.”

“Okay, maybe this turn will be better.” Mike retrieved the puck out of the slot on his side and placed it on the table, ready to hit. I stood ready, but this time I was the distracted one. I couldn’t get the feeling out of my head that I had revealed one of my powers to him. My mother said to never do that. But was it even one of my traits? The air hockey puck sailed straight under me and landed in his goal. One- all.

“Oh yeah!” Mike hooted, but I didn’t feel like partying anymore. I walked away from the table.

“Oh, what’s the matter, Eden, afraid of being beat?”

“No, I just don’t feel like playing anymore.”

“Oh, come on! We were right in the middle of a game!”

I walked away ignoring their pleas as the allure of the hoop game called me over. I had just pushed a token in the slot and picked up a ball, when I heard my name. But it wasn’t from Mike or Zoe.

“So this is where you spend your runaway hours?” I glanced over my shoulder and saw the creep standing behind me.

“Who are you and what do you want?”

“Don’t you see the family resemblance?” he smirked.

I turned to take a good look at him, intrigued. The guy had to be about my mother’s age, maybe a little older and had the same grey- blue eyes my mother has.

“Uncle Adam?”

“In the flesh. Now lets get out of here.”

I chuckled as I turned back around and threw a ball at the highest scoring hoop. It went in. “I am not going anywhere with you.”

Adam clapped. “Good shot. But its not surprising, seeing whose blood you carry in your veins.”

“Do you mean yours and Mum’s, or…”

“Lakyn’s?” He finished for her. “Either way, you have so many abilities you are not even aware of, Eden. And some of them are quite dangerous.”

“How do you know this?”

“I was there from the moment you were born. Trust me, I know.”

I tossed another ball in, this time in a lower scoring hoop and it went in as well. “I’m still not going with you.” As I picked up a third ball and pushed it towards the hoops, it froze mid- air. I gasped and looked back at my uncle. He shrugged.

“Game over.”

As he walked away, the ball remained frozen.

“Wait, how did you do that?” I asked, glancing back and forth from the ball to him.

“If you come with me, I’ll tell you.”

“My mother sent you, didn’t she?”

“She might have.”

“So what you just did, can I do that?”

“Everyone’s traits are different, but probably. If you come with me, you can find out more.”

“I can’t just leave my friends.”

“Yes, you can. You can always make new friends.”

I stopped walking and looked at my friends playing the Daytona. Mike was showing Zoe how to drive, which was really cute. And then I looked at my uncle, waiting patiently outside the mouth of the arcade by a black town car. If I stayed, I would never know what my traits would be, I would never learn how to use them. But I would be a normal teenager, going to school and hanging out at the arcade with her friends. If I went with my uncle, I would no longer be normal. I wanted both lives. But the idea of having amazing powers intrigued me most. In the end I chose door two. Looking back I regretted leaving my friends. But I knew they would never understand. I knew deep down that I was made for a higher purpose.

Reuban can see the torment within Jess and it is breaking his heart. He would do anything to ease her pain even if it meant letting her walk away, destroying him in the process. His only hope is to seek guidance from Brigate and finally understand the true meaning of Megan’s Prophecy. It started with a Prophecy and it is there he will find the truth and it is a secret that could tear the Council to pieces.

Death & Maria…

I stood staring through the glass partition when I saw that ginger Empath look up and storm in my direction.  I rolled my eyes and sighed.  Why did I always have to receive abuse from women?  Civilisations had bowed down to me in fear and now I couldn’t even scare a stupid Empath!

“What the hell do you think you’re doin?”  She was stood in my way with her hand on her hips and it was taking all of my self-control not to move her out of the way.  Jess was obviously feeling elated because her wings were fully outstretched,

“I’M GOING TO SEE MY DAUGHTER, NOT THAT IT’S ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS!” I frowned,

“And you can cut that out right now!”  And now the silly woman was pouting and tapping her foot.  This will not do at all!

“DO YOU NOT KNOW WHO I AM YOU SILLY CREATURE?” I bellowed.  That should have scared her but I watched in amazement when she looped her arm in mine and turned us around.  I found myself looking over my shoulder at Jess kissing her wolf while I was being manhandled by a woman,

“Yadda, yadda, yadda, I know exactly who you are and if you call me a stupid ginger Empath once more I’m slapping your face.  Oh and you can pack that stupid voice in as well.  It doesn’t work on me when Jess does it and it sure as hell won’t work coming from Death, so you can just stop it!”

“HOW DARE YOU SPEAK…”

“Seriously!  When was the last time you spoke normal?  I’m betting you didn’t speak to Eve like that, in fact I bet you were all hearts and flowers before you knocked her up?” she interrupted.  If she wasn’t careful I would judge her right here.  How dare she speak to me in this manner!

“HOW…”  Heavens above, she was interrupting me again!  She stopped and stood in front of me placing her hand on my arm,

“Look cut the crap!  I can feel how worried you are for Jess so be her father for once and not a ‘know it all’ celestial being.  Her voice scares the shit out of her and I’m guessing you had a hand in saving her again so please try and be normal for her.”

“LOOK…” I coughed.  I couldn’t believe a stupid ginger Empath was making me change my voice but here I was doing just that, “…she is my daughter and I couldn’t let her die so I helped her along a little.  Not that it’s any of your business might I add!” I sighed,

“The name is Maria by the way, NOT the stupid ginger Empath!  Jess is ok but she will need time to come to terms with the fact you’re here.  When Eve died it destroyed her and she’s felt alone ever since.  Deep down she doesn’t even hate you, she regrets not knowing you and so barging in there isn’t going to do you any good.  I have no idea what you’re doing here because Jess isn’t ready and you have incredibly shit timing!” she pouted,

“I am here to protect my daughter from the approaching darkness and if I go back now Evelyn will have my balls!”  I seemed to have an uncontrollable urge to talk to this woman and it was annoying.

“Excuse me, Evelyn?” she questioned looking puzzled.  Of course, she wouldn’t know Evelyn was in the mists with me,

“Yes Evelyn, my wife and Jess’ mother.  She would not be pleased if I simply ran back home without trying to help our daughter!” I scowled,

“Eve is with you?” she said astonished,

“Yes.  Has anyone told you that you’re nosey for a crossbreed?” I said raising an eyebrow,

“But she died?”

“Yes indeed she did!”  Maria was starting to try my patience,

“And you didn’t judge her?”  Her voice was sounding an octave higher probably from the shock,

“It was not my place to!”

“Because she was your wife?”

“ENOUGH WITH THE QUESTIONS!  EVELYN IS NOT YOUR CONCERN AND NEITHER IS JESS.  IF YOU DO NOT STEP OUT OF MY WAY I WILL SMITE YOU!” I bellowed shacking the light fittings.  I stood in absolute horror when the stupid ginger Empath started laughing,

“Oh…sorry…wait…can’t breathe…oh God…smite!” she snorted and I raised an eyebrow.  It was no wonder Bunny and Jess liked this woman because she was insane,

“Will you stop laughing?”  Even I was starting to smile,

“I swear if you call me a stupid ginger Empath once more…I mean it!  You know Eve was my friend and it was my job to protect her.  I’m now friends with Jess and if you think I’m gonna let you stroll in there and upset her after she’s been asleep for six weeks you really have another thing coming!  You may be a scary Archangel but you’re also a father and it’s about time you stepped up to your responsibilities.  I promise you that once she is a little more stable I will take great pleasure in introducing you but for now just let her have a little time with the man she loves, please.”

Becoming Invisible (The Alaskan Heart Saga) by Tiffany Carmouche’

Cover

Becoming Invisible is the third book The Alaskan Heart Saga, a Contemporary New Adult Series about finding unexpected love and a woman’s fight for survival.

Passion. ..Obsession. ..Love…Loss.

https://www.facebook.com/events/394795043973368/ release party

Tiffany Carmouche’ has mastered the art of the suspenseful thriller! Had my husband and German Shepherd not been sitting here as I read the last of Becoming Invisible tonight, I never would have been able to finish it!

The rich blend of love and romance combined with “the fear of breathing” tension had me captivated from the first words. Becoming Invisible feels the culmination of The Alaskan Hearth Saga as I convinced myself that I finally know how this is really going to end midway through this book. Then I get pulled up short by another brilliant cliff-hanger that leaves me literally screaming “You have got to be kidding” when I realize this is the last page my beloved Kindle will be feeding to me.

Tiffany’s characters are so compelling, so real life that I was breathing when they breathed, loving when they loved, crying when they cried and bleeding when they bled.

I will be counting down the days, the weeks or the months until Tiffany Carmouche’ releases the next morsel of The Alaskan Heart Saga.

In Love by Design, The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod by Tracy Ellen

A date with fate

tracy ellenMeet Tracy Ellen…

When I was eleven, I got about a hundred bucks in cash between my birthday and Christmas presents. This was BIG money back then. I spent every red cent of it on five pair of darling shoes and a couple of heaving bosom / manly muscle romance novels. For all of my life, I’ve always had a thing for shoes that make me say “Oh yum”, and a thing for reading books with plots centered on dangerously smart men and sassy, intelligent women. It’s not an exaggeration to say I’ve avidly read everything I could get my hands on to find these jewels.

One day this past year or so, I realized that I spend more money on books now than I do on shoes. I was stunned. Should I be ashamed of this fact or proud? Then an even stranger thing happened. It was like a switch turned off/on inside me. All of a sudden instead of wanting to read about romance, I wanted to write my own stories about the building sexual attraction between a confident woman and a mysterious man.

So began my budding writing career. Then I made another happy discovery; I absolutely love writing! Since then, I’ve become a writing fiend. My self-published books include A Date with Fate and Courted by Karma in The Adventures of Anabel Axelrod series. I’m releasing the third book in this series, In Love by Design, in September 2013.

For those of you who may want to know some pertinent facts: Don’t worry–I still adore yummy shoes and always will, even when I have one foot in the grave. Also, I was born in Indiana, the third out of five hellions. (My mother wanted to go to work every day.) I’ve always lived in the Midwest, except for six steamy months in Florida when I was nineteen. Currently, I reside in the suburbs of St. Paul, Minnesota with my family. The college town of Northfield featured in Anabel’s Adventures is just down the road a jaunt.

I love, love, love connecting with readers. Reviews, comments, posts, and emails are always welcome. Follow my blog (although, I’m sorry to say it’s boring because I’d rather write books than write posts in my blog) or like me on Facebook to be aware of events, giveaways, new books I’m publishing, or a rare posting of something that strikes my funny bone. (Hmm, for a woman who loves to connect, I’m actually quite unsociable in the social media forum…)

Excerpt:

Excerpt from I Remember – Remembrance Series, Book 1

By Cynthia P. O’Neill

Prologue

I wandered along a path as the sun began to set across the horizon, lighting the sky with deep hues of orange, purple and pinks.  I didn’t know where I was, but the countryside was simply breathtaking.

“Angeline, where are you?”  A familiar male voice called out.

“Come find me, Daniel,” she announced playfully, in the distance.

Finding no one else around, I decided to head their way to ask for directions.

            “Where are you hiding, my love?  You know I will find you; and when I do, I will smother you with kisses,” he responded, full of laughter.

            Their voices led me to a beautiful meadow filled with spring flowers and the sound of a river in the distance.  They were dressed in Victorian fare, running playfully until Daniel caught the girl who must have been Angeline. They fell to the ground together, laughing, near a tall tree.

            As I walked toward them, I watched Daniel lean in to kiss Angeline softly on the lips, her hands circling around his neck and pulling him closer.  I stopped in my tracks feeling like I had invaded a private moment, but I still needed directions in order to return home.

            “Excuse me, I don’t mean to intrude but I could really use your help,” I stated softly, so not alarm them.

            They continued, without even a glance my way.   How rude.  I cleared my throat loudly and spoke again, but no answer.

            I was frustrated.  How could they not hear me?

            Suddenly, the landscape began to twist and shift into something dark and evil.  I tried to turn and run but found myself unable to move.  My heart began beating erratically as fear set in.

            A tall figure appeared before me with ghostly shadows swirling and moaning around it.  It was dressed in the darkest cloak I’d ever seen, with the hood draped in such a way as to cast shadows across the few visible areas of the face, making it impossible to see who or what it was.

            An arm rose revealing long willowy fingers, aged and deformed and pointed at me.  A sadistic female voice bellowed, “I warn you.  Do not seek him out!  The prophecy must not come to pass.  If you defy me, I will make your life a living hell, taking all that you hold dear.”

That’s when the figure’s head tilted up and her glowing red eyes locked onto mine, sending a chill down my spine.  Then the shadows began to swirl around my body, suffocating me.

“STOP!”  The scream came from nowhere, catching me by surprise.

“LEAVE HER ALONE!”  This time I recognized a man’s voice.

One of the shadows grabbed my arm and a piercing, “NOOOO” sounded, from deep within my chest, echoing off all that was around me.

My eyes shot open, as I bolted upright in bed.  I looked around and realized I was in my bedroom.

I reached for the light. Turning it on, I tried to catch my breath.  My only thought was that the dreams were back and they were worse.  I’d seen a witch spirit previously, but not to this extent.

Wrapping my arms around my chest to calm myself, I felt a sharp pain on my right arm.  I looked down to see the reddened hand print, where the dark shadow had grabbed me, slowly fading from existence.  What the heck?

The adventures of Owen Ryer and friends continue in this third installment of the five book series.  Dark watchers want to steal his powers and they will stop at nothing to get what they want.  From kidnapping to murder – When is enough, enough?  Can Owen defend the ones he loves or is all hope lost as he battles the greatest evil he has ever known?

Owen thinks he’s battle-hardened.  He has firm control of his gifts and his own watcher to train, yet with two years of experience behind him things are not getting any easier.  As Owen grows in experience, so does the darkness and danger.  Lucie is taken, making Owen realize just how much she really means to him, but is it her the dark watchers want or is she only the bait in an elaborate trap?

Author profile 5 cropI’ve always been a writer but let me tell you, it’s lots more fun when I can make the choices about where a story is going.  I’m also a teacher so I get that we have to have students meet certain criteria, but as a kid… I hated being told what to write.  The good side of growing up is that you can write whatever you want.  The down side… Now I can’t read it without my glasses!

My Secret Watchers series is about young Owen Ryer who discovers he has a special talent for seeing the darker side of life.  The things he is driven to do are not only dangerous but have to be kept a secret.  I sat down with my boys and began brainstorming based on some of our favorite characters from literature.  Wizards, vampires, werewolves, and the son of a god had already been done… so what was left?  Hello, special ability!  Mix in some unique features, some good friends, a strong mentor, helpful adults and voilà, I hope a star is born!  I’ve never been bitten by the writing bug with such vengeance and book one was completed in only six weeks!  Ten weeks later book two was complete and I’m now finishing book three and at work on book four with plans for five books in the series.

Personally, I’m drawn to all things ‘action-adventure’ in film and literature.  Notice I didn’t say ‘real life’?  No bungee jumping, cliff diving or parkour for me.  I’d likely kill myself as I’m a klutz.  Skydiving? Nope!  I’d be the one to fall out of the plane without a parachute.  My oldest and I have taken karate together and I’ve spent hours watching both boys participate in a variety of sports, including parkour, without incident, unless of course you count occasional broken toes.  I have created a character who is much braver, tougher and more graceful than I am.

It’s my wish that you, the reader, have at least half as much fun and connection to these characters as I have as I wrote them!  These books are for my family, friends, students and mentors.  Big hugs for you all!  We can be better – together!  Relax, enjoy and dream big!  Only you know what your tomorrows can hold!
